Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
The A*Teens originally planned their second album, Teen Spirit, to be a mixture of both ABBA covers and new compositions, however that idea was soon dropped and instead it is packed full of fresh new songs. The ABBA influences are still there but they are carefully moulded in with contemporary tracks that you would associate with the likes of Britney Spears ("Rockin'"), Steps ("For All That I Am") and the Backstreet Boys ("...To the Music"). There are also references to other Scandinavian pop supergroups; for instance, "Halfway Around the World" shares many similarities with Aqua's "Around the World" and "All My Love" could have been recorded by Ace of Base. However, familiarity is one of the essential ingredients of pop, and with exceptional tracks like "Firefly" and "Sugar Rush" this is an album both timely and catchy. Pop music doesn't get much better this. --John Galilee

"Teen Spirit" - a non-stop pop rollercoaster!5
I bought this album in Sweden simply because I loved the single "Upside Down" - but I never expected to hear such a well-written and varied pop masterpiece!

"Teen Spirit" takes you on a thrilling pop rollercoaster that leaves you with a smile on your face and the urge to listen to it over and over again! Here's a short description of each track with my rating out of ten:

1. Upside Down - the bouncy beat and catchy sing-a-long chorus make this a great opener. 8/10

2. ...To The Music - a feel good party song; not the best on the album, but still enjoyable. 6/10

3. Halfway Round The World - this one will grow on you; the beat is infectious and the melody equally as catchy. 8/10

4. Firefly - a beautiful ballad with a melody to die for! 9/10

5. Sugar Rush - my least favourite track on the album, but still a quality pop song. 5/10

6. Rockin' - the chorus is soooo catchy; an instant favourite with me. 10/10

7. Just Around The Corner Of Your Eye - quite a mature ballad with thought-provoking lyrics. 7/10

8. Slammin' Kinda Love - very R'n'B, very groovy, very cool! 9/10

9. All My Love - sounds a lot like Ace Of Base, which is why I like it! 8/10

10. For All That I Am - the standout track; the guitars and groovy beat give it a slightly rocky feel, and the melody won't leave your head! 10/10

11. (That's What) It's All About - I call this power pop; like Britney/Backstreet Boys. 9/10

12. Morning Light - like Ace of Base again with a great key change towards the end. 9/10

13. Back For More - a very fitting finale; sums up what A*Teens are all about - great melodies, funky beats, and happy lyrics. 9/10

So there you have it - I have listened to this album virtually non-stop for the past 7 days; if you buy only one pop album this year, make it "Teen Spirit"!

a-teens... poppy surprise!!!4
first of all i have to say that pop music is REALLY not my style. i'm more into r'n'b, but i wanted to have a (little) break and listen to some pop music, you know, to check it out a bit, and i heard from a friend of mine who has this c.d, that it's really good!!! so eventually i bought it, and i'm really not disappointed! i mean the songs are very good and easy to listen to, fun to dance with and what else can i say? a-teens really are a good group!

i have to say that all the songs are really really good, but my favorits are: upside down, firefly, slammin' kind of love, all my love, and morning light. i only have this c.d for like 2 days, and i'm sure that the other tracks will soon be added to my "favourits" list.

but... (there has to be a "but", right?) the lyrics sometimes can be... just stupid!!!!!!! i mean, o.k, they're just "teens" , but a sentence like "honey to the bee" (sugar rush.) fits more to babies songs!!! can't you be a little more "literate"?????????

anyway, i know that this is quite a bad thing but still i have to say, sometimes pop music CAN be good!!!

Worthy ABBA successors4
It disturbs me greatly to say this, but I think this is a fantastic CD. I'm from the U.S. and, oddly, the CD was released here first. Although I'm generally an indie rock fan (James, Travis, Embrace, etc.), I seem to have a weakness for the A*Teens. This is incredibly infectious stuff, all very ABBA-esque. There's certainly nothing very deep here and the pictures of the band on the inside are embarrassingly ridiculous. But if you're able to accept this for what it is--simple, good pop music--you should be thoroughly satisfied.
