A superb Rodgers & Hammerstein soundtrack reissue5
It's a great treat to listen to this superb King and I soundtrack CD. The EMI-Angel engineers have skilfully and lovingly remastered the soundtrack recording such that the voices and orchestra sound clean, clear and vibrant. The critic-proof performances have spoken for themselves and hardly need any endorsement. I know the soundtrack means you only get to hear Yul Brynner in one song, but this is a small matter, for this reissue has given us some extra, tantalising music. It's great to hear the Uncle Tom's Cabin Ballet, superbly renderred by Rita Moreno as Tuptim. And it's also great to hear the underscore to the dialogue without needing to hear the dialogue itself. I do wish this CD had included more underscore, but at least it's a milestone in the release history of this soundtrack. The detailed liner notes are a real bonus, as they're filled with a palace full of facts about the filming. In short, a great release of a classic R&H soundtrack that's self-recommending in itself.

A very complete recording5
This film soundtrack is great. Great vocal performances. Marni Nixon's vocals are terrific and she does such a great impersonating Deborah Kerr, you can hardly tell the difference betwen the two. We get several of the songs deleted from the film and "The Small House of Uncle Thomas" at last!
Rita Moreno recorded all the vocals for Tuptim but was dubbed over in post-production by Leona Gordon. It's Moreno's vocal on "My Lord & Master" but the other two songs are performed by Gordon. (Moreno's "We Kiss In A Shadow" vocal can be heard on the special edition DVD if you change the audio track to 'score only'.)The highlight of the album is the deleted song "Shall I Tell You What I Think of You" - see if you can spot the switches between Marni Nixon and Deborah Kerr. Possibly one of the finest pieces of voice dubbing ever!

Brings the movie back to life5
This is the sound track of "The King and I" (1956), a musical retelling of "Anna and the King of Siam" and the third Rodgers & Hammerstein Broadway hit. Naturally a movie sound track can not hold a candle to the play if you have seen it. However this is the version I grew up with. And this is the version I bought. Many of the Songs were written for this story and have no meaning outside of the context of the film. Yet many people can relate to where they were when they saw the film or have been in similar situations and the songs match their life. Everyone has a favorite my two are "Getting to Know You" and "Hello, Young Lovers"
