Customer Reviews
Good Motown Fare
The Isley Brothers spent two or three years on Motown in the late '60s. They had had success before, and were to go on to be one of the soul supergroups of the '70s.
Their hits from their Motown years can be found on their 'Motown Early Classics' CD. This album is the perfect complement to that one, as there is no overlap. Buy the two, and you have a fairly comprehensive collection of their Detroit days.
This one has one British hit 'Put Yourself In My Place' (also a hit for The Elgins), from Tamla Motown's re-release mania, when for a while they could not put a foot wrong. Also here are cover versions of other Motownwer's hits: Marvin's 'How Sweet It Is' , Martha's 'Nowhere to Run', The Supremes 'I Hear A Symphony' and much less well known, The Monitors 'Greetings This Is Uncle Sam'.
'Take Some Time Out For Love' was used to advertise a chocolate bar some years ago.
They were never treated as a top act by Motown. They were in the shadow of The Four Tops, The Miracles and The Temptations who were all established hit makers by the time they joined. Their music stands comparison to all of them. All of the producers and musicians respected their professionalism, but The Isleys did not like the Motown production line system. They allegedly recorded the very first version of 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine', but as far as I know, it has never been released.
This is good Motown fare. Some of the Funk Brothers and The Isley Brothers' finest.
All Stereo Isleys But One !
The Isley Brothers only stayed with Motown for three years - but managed to have genius songwriters Holland-Dozier-Holland write a couple of thrilling and emotional songs for them: 'This Ole Heart of Mine' and 'I Guess I'll Always Love You ' Neither are included here - instead you get a selection from their first Motown album in that classic year 1966, mainly energetic, superbly arranged versions of other Motown acts ' hits including 'Nowhere To Run' and ' I Hear A Symphony'. The highlight for me was the inclusion of the follow up single to ' This 'Ole Heart Of Mine' - the sizzling 'Take Some Time Out For Love' - which I bought in '66 with the magical 5 orange stars gracing the paper sleeve .
The other highlight for us all is that all tracks but one 'How Sweet It Is ' - are in superb digital STEREO . Why 'How Sweet It Is' is the only mono track beats me - but it is excellent, blazing mono nonetheless !
Curiously the other Isleys collection in the Motown Early Classics series on Spectrum is also an all stereo collection (17 tracks out of 18) except for 'I Guess I'll Always Love You ' which can be found in all its stereo glory in Spectrum's 'Motown Big Hits And Hard To Find Classics' series.
