Amazon.co.uk Review
After four studio albums, Ben Harper has finally released Live from Mars, his first official live set, a 25-song double-disc collection that surveys each of his four albums and adds a couple of well-executed, if not terribly inventive, covers. Disc one is electric and finds Harper and the Innocent Criminals tearing through their patented mix of rock, folk, soul and blues. Yet the solo acoustic disc two is the true prize, putting the spotlight squarely on Harper's incredibly agile, versatile and enormously moving voice. In this pared-down setting, Harper shows an uncanny ability to connect with his audience, offering one spellbinding performance after another. Culled from two years' worth of shows--no two songs are taken from the same concert--Live from Mars provides a welcome overview of Harper's many facets. --Marc Greilsamer
CD Description
Throughout the '90s, Ben Harper's blend of blues, funk, soul, and folk quietly earned him a hardcore following of diehard fans over the span of four studio albums. For the two-CD LIVE FROM MARS, Harper and his tight three-piece band the Innocent Criminals cull performances from a variety of concerts, featuring interesting arrangements and odd nuances applied to his best-known songs, along with an eclectic array of covers.
Armed with his hollow-neck '20s-era Weissenborn lap slide guitar, Harper rages throughout the plugged-in Disc One with highlights including the human-beat box-driven radio hit "Steal My Kisses", and the churning opening number "Glory & Consequence". "Burn One Down", a sprightly ode to herb, evokes Bob Marley's "Redemption Song", while a simmering "Sexual Healing" channels the spirit of Marvin Gaye. Unplugged and introspective, Disc Two overflows with Biblical metaphors captured in delicate numbers like "Waiting on An Angel","Power of the Gospel", and "In the Lord's Arms". Tying it all together is a heartfelt reading of the Verve's "The DrugsDon't Work", and the epic 10-minute closer "Like a King/I'll Rise", featuring lyrics borrowed from a Maya Angelou poem.
Customer Reviews
A must purchase for any music fan!
Live from Mars shares all of Ben Harpers greatest songs and then some. If you consider yourself a fan of Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix or Bob Marley then you should get this album! The first Cd starts off rocking with Glory and Consequence and subsequently flows brilliantly. The cover of Sexual Healing is excellant and the live version of Steal my Kisses is way better than the album version. The first Cd gets better with every listen and his lyrics really hit home about the messages he is trying to portray in his songs. The first cd is basically really soulful and lovely to listen to on all ocasions.
The second Cd is basically Ben and his guitar struming out some heartfelt tunes. The lyrics are good and the mood of the second Cd is great for when you just want to chill. The cover of The Drugs dont Work is also really good and if you didnt like the original you may like this version. You are also able to feel for Ben in songs such as Please Bleed and Roses from my Friends.
To summarise this is a great album definately worth purchasing if you like relevent soulful and moving music. Buy it now!
More musical magic from Ben Harper
On this live album, Ben Harper and his band play all of their greatest songs and many sensitive covers live. If you are already a fan of Ben Harper, you will know of his amazingly versatile voice, on this album he is really set free. You cannot help but be amazed by his vocals on Woman in you, it is filled with emotion and the raw power that it gives. All the songs are performed with innovation and freedom from the album tracks. The bands willingness to continually improve their songs is a testament to their great musicianship. It is simply amazing what they can do with a simple chord sequence. The first CD is packed with live electric performances full of power and energy, or rich with smoothness. The second CD is a mellow acoustic set played in a small club, consisting of many favourites played acoustically such as the incredible please bleed. If you only get one Ben Harper album make it this one, but I assure that once you have this one you will have to hear more!
