Club friendly choices
It is a great testament to the skill of the musicians, singers, writers, arrangers and producers of forty years ago that these Detroit production line models of disposable pop should now be awarded classic status and be so much in demand. This and its companion volume, lovingly compiled for the English market, is subtitled 20 Collectable Modernist Soul Classics and are the floor filling sounds that echoed and spinned inside the Mod clubs in the mid sixties, made by acts such as the Miracles, Martha and the Vandellas, the Contours, Eddie Holland, Marvin Gaye, the Marvelettes, the Temptations, Chris Clark and many more.
Northern Soul was something different, although there are overlaps. These are all highly contagious dance tracks, with clattery trebly beats, pumping bass rhythms and excited, passionate vocals, and some of the rarer items, such as Tommy Good's Baby I Miss you, would have cost a small ransom to acquire. This compilation would make a good companion set for The Trojan Mod Reggae Box Set and any good original mod group anthology that contains the Who, the Small Faces, the Birds, the Kinks, Creation and others of their ilk.
All 20 tracks are in club speaker friendly mono.
Mods Meet Northern Soul
This CD is quite a mixture. Around 5 out and out northern vibes with Tommy Good and Martha's One Way Out leading the way, mixed with several "club"/Twisted Wheel sounds such as the Velvelettes duo, finishing with records that were always more popular in the States than the UK, including Too Many Fish...., Hey Harmonica Man and others.
For the money an outstanding buy and a thoughtful mix. My favourites? Got to be One Way Out, absolutely classic Northern Motown, closely followed by the Detroit Spinners and Earl Van Dyke (The Funk Brothers. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.
