Here Dre pioneers his patented 'G-Funk' music which blends the gangsta rap lyrics (dealing with guns, drugs and girls) first seen in NWA, with a more funk basedmusical backdrop that could be likened to that of the 1970's Harlem scene. Other notable instances on this album include the first Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg collaborations on tracks such as 'Stranded On Death Row' and the much sampled 'Nuthin' But A G Thang'.

1989's Straight Outta Compton, by Dre's previous outfit N.W.A, may have shined the public spotlight on the genre, but The Chronic legitimised it. That is not to say that Snoop Doggy Dogg (The Chronic marks his debut) and Dre's raps are for everyone; the subject matter is the sex, drugs, violence, and politics of South Central Los Angeles, and the phrasing is explicit, to say the least. But The Chronic's real genius is the music. By breeding hip-hop, jazz (studio instrumentation includes saxophones and flutes), funk, and soul (sampled artists include Parliament, Donny Hathaway, and Isaac Hayes), Dre creates downright intoxicating grooves. If you can't feel The Chronic pulsating through your veins, maybe your heart's not pumping. --Bill Crandall

Amazing, shaped the game
Dr Dre is the best producer and one of the best rappers in the game. his productions are brilliant and his rhymes are top quality, the Chronic shows that. With Nuttin but a g thang he has produced one of the best rap songs ever, and a song that changed the game. He has introduced one of the most famous styles of hip hop with The Chronic, and that is G Funk. Also Deeeez Nuts is hilarious!
I used to think this was over rated, i have come to realize that it certainly isn't! Great beats and great lyrics, as well as great guests! One of the best hip hop albums ever and the best old school album, essential

five star Classic hip hop, f**king brilliant!!
Many people think that "2001" is dr dre's best album, and i dont disagree that it is a great album but i think that this one stands above "2001" and almost any other rap album you can think of. With classic songs such as nuthin' but a g thang, Rat tat tat tat. It is the hip hop album of all hip hop albums. One of my favourite songs has got to be Rat tat tat tat. Along with the help of snoop dogg, dr dre makes that song one to be remembered. Any hip hop fan or rap fan etc must get this album because you are bound to love it. It may be an oldish album but i still listen to it regularly as it is such a masterpiece.

the best from the west coast
dre had already made a big name for himself with nwa, this one turned him into a legend. Nuttin but a g thang is perhaps the best hip hop tune of all time. dre invented the sound of g funk which dominated west coast rap for a few years, but this album contains the first and best samples. snoop is only 18 but clearly had unique chemistry with dre, his presence greatly livens up the album. don't underestimate dre's raping ability either. Theres good stuff from rbx, lady of rage and daz too.
