Amazon.co.uk Review
Operation Flashpoint--a cross between Hidden and Dangerous and Delta Force: Land Warrior--is about as real as it gets when it comes to combat sims. Based in the first/third person viewpoint, you start as a private in the Allied forces in 1985, sent on a number of missions against the imposing Russian forces. From here, following a campaign that takes you across many villages, forests and enemy bases, the idea is simple: stay sharp, stay alive and follow orders.

But Operation Flashpoint doesn't stop at being a first-person shooter in an army simulated world, for all the vehicles, whether it be a jeep or an Apache helicopter, can also be controlled by you. Set across luscious landscapes and rolling valleys, you'll soon find start to think you're in a Chris Ryan book or army film as you and your platoon sweep a valley in extended file.

In addition to the great eye candy, the AI for both your fellow soldiers and the enemy is very impressive, and at times you can soon be left behind in the battlefield if you don't pay close attention to what's going on. And the added bonus of a mission editor will allow you to continue with more assignments after you've finished the testing campaign and single mission levels.

As with most games of this ilk, there's a heavy emphasis on multiplayer--without it hindering the single player game--and therefore the usual array of deathmatch, capture the flag and domination options are all here, with online communities around the globe already growing in vast numbers day by day.

Make no mistake, Codemasters have come up with one of those games that'll be hard to beat over the next year, and if you've ever thought of donning that 58 pattern webbing then here's your chance to do so without getting too dirty. --Jason Denwood

Manufacturer's Description
Operation Flashpoint offers the ultimate realistic war experience, which draws the player into a deeply believable military environment. For the first time in an action game, the player controls and commands not just soldiers and squads of all levels but also land, sea and air vehicles - both military and civilian - from cars, to APCs, to tanks and even military helicopters. The scenario is modern warfare: It is 1985, in the midst of the Cold War, and Gorbachev has been elected to power bringing with him policies of glasnost and perestroika. However, resistance Soviet groups are opposed to the new wave and are refusing to serve the new regime in Moscow. One group has taken control of an island community, and is using it as an armed stronghold for the old order. Operation Flashpoint opens with the player joining the neighboring US force against the Soviets.Additionally, a prequel campaign titled Resistance, which is set years before Operation Flashpoint's Cold War Crisis, has been added. Resistance creates an additional 100Km2 island and casts the player as Victor Troska, an experienced ex-Special Forces soldier forced to lead the ramshackle Resistance effort against the Soviets before the invasion of the Malden Islands.

A true classic5
I've been digging this back out every now and then for years it's such a great game. The best tactical military shooter i ever played.

Recently though with upgrades to Win XP and newer gfx cards etc I'm having problems. Most notably a bug which makes the mouse very glitchy, and also if I patch above v1.0 the soldier models become invisible...

As I said highly reccommended and almost worth building an old Win98 PC just to play it on, but if anyone's got solutions to the above bugs please let us know!

Unbelievable5
This has to be on the of the best games I have ever played and it completely outshines any of its closest rivals. Having previously played military games such as the delta force series and Tom Clancy range I was left feeling dissapointed. The extremely poor AI was anoying and led to a very unrealistc experience. Also the fact that enemies died instantly when shot anywhere on the body was amateurish.

Operation Flashpoint is extremely realistic action strategy game, as players need to rely on their strategic planning as much as their shooting abilities to win. Working as a team is vital on this game and the easy controls make leading a team an enjoyable experience. The enviroment in this game is done beautifully as players can pick up dead soldiers weapons as well as enter any unoccupied vechile whether it be tanks cars planes or helicopters. The good AI means not only are the computer characters good shots, but they are also difficult to outmanouver. The variety of missions which includes undercover missions, all out assault missions, tank driving missions and helicopter missions means this game will have you hooked for hours.

However as with all games there are faults which include the difficulty of the game which can be tricky at times, and the dodgy grapics of buildings.

Overall this is the absolute best in modern day warfare still to this day.

Top4
I am trying to pick up a copy of this game whilst i wait for the xbox version to be released, i played it for quite some time about a year or so ago having borrowed it off a friend and was EXTREMELY impressed. firstly id like to discuss the failings of the game which are mainly graphical, textures are crap and the soldier appear to have floating limbs, the environments are fairly sparsely populated and lacking in polygons BUT still give the impression of being in a warzone better than ANY other war sim ive ever played...

however these minor issues soon become moot points, the storyline sucks you into the role of an infantry soldier and is well played out through intermissions between the action, at one point you may be standing around chewing the fat with other soldiers, at other times you are travelling with your CO between destinations, importantly, at NO TIME does the game allow the player to suspend disbelief that he is involved in a war...

the 4th or 5th mission really says it all, having been involved in a few skirmishes you are sent on a night time mission during which all your fellow team mates are lost, the next mission involves having to travel - on foot - over 1KM through dense forests and open fields, highly populated with enemies to command HQ on a tight time limit, no other game has sucked me into its environment in this way, and ive been playing games for over 15 years now...

Sonically OF is superb in the same way the ghost recon is, the missions are lush with sonic furniture, birds chirp, grass crunches underfoot, and you can hear the pant of soldiers and even your own heart beat as you run ducking and strafing to avoid enemy flack, marvellously evocative...

'K im rambling, but i loved this game and cant wait for it on the XBOX, total and utter quality, ignore the naysayers and heretics, buy flashpoint and remember - War aint for the faint hearted.
