HELL, FIRE AND BRIMSTONE
After the somewhat farcical Mr McMahon victory in '99 and the all too predictable conclusion in 2000, the Rumble match of 2001 sees the event return to its' full head-on, chaotic glory. Five former WWF Champions are involved in the thirty man battle royal and although it was always likely to come down to either Stone Cold or The Rock, the spectacle is true classic blood and thunder. One larger than life superstar makes a welcome, devastating return, a marquee name comedian gives an amusing cameo and a wrestling legend of yesteryear provides an entertaining, if somewhat brief interlude. Then there is Kane, a picture of domination and destruction, seizing centre stage for the third consecutive PPV, spearheading a brillant hardcore melee involving Raven, Al Snow, Perry Saturn and Steve Blackman which totally sets the tone for the drama that follows. The remainder of the card is also packed with extreme action; Edge & Christian vs. The Dudleys for the tag titles and a fantastic ladder match between old adversaries Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho with the Intercontinental belt at stake. There is also a terrifically tense mood of high drama at the conclusion of the Ivory/Chyna Women's Championship match, which really does leave question as to whether the story is a wrestling angle or actual reality. The chief singles contest, Kurt Angle vs. Triple H for the WWF title is technically excellent as you would expect, with the appearance of Austin 3:16 at the conclusion, always guaranteed to inject controversy and raise the roof. This spectacular fully showcases a WWF roster which has rarely, if ever, looked more formidable.
