Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
Heaven knows things got even worse before they got better for wordy folk-pop minstrel David Gray. Much like its immediate predecessor A Century Ends, Flesh managed to sell only in trickles at the time of its release and an underwhelmed record company swiftly shunted him in the direction of the exit. Still, in the words of his very own "New Horizon", "Things come too easy, I get suspicious". And judging by the salivating fervency and Zeppelin-esque swagger of opener "What Are You?", an anti-sheep mentality rallying-cry for non-conformity ("Once you sang your own song, now you're dancing to the same drum"), Gray was a fighter and not a quitter--we can only wonder if he subsequently used the line "You lost interest, you lost your spine" on his Christmas card to Virgin Records. There's also a fine rocking momentum to the tuneful, should-have-been-a-single "Made Up My Mind" but, generally, this is a more pacifying proposition than A Century Ends, with Gray in love (in fact, he'd recently married) and--as witnessed by such lines about "smelling the heather" and "listening to the ocean's lullaby"--contentedly in awe of nature's beauty. --Kevin Maidment
Customer Reviews
This is a 5 star album with only 4, am i insane
No. This album is a 5 star album, however in comparison to century end's its only 4. this album starts with what are you and at first, it was the only david gray song i disliked, however after a while i realised it was a really good song, mainly because it leads so well into one of Grays best songs, The Light. This album does have a few iffy tracks, like loves old songs, but songs like coming down and new horizons boost this album. the problems gray had with this album was tough, but he still managed to create a stand out album
Not a bad track
Like alot of david gray fans I started first heard his music when 'White Ladder' (also an excellent album) was realeased. The first song of his I heard was of course 'Babylon' and I was hooked as soon as I heard it. At first I thought that 'White Ladder' was his best album untill I bought 'flesh'. There isn't a bad song on the album and my personal favourite is 'The Light'. This is a must have album for any true david gray fan.
Simply Brilliant
I'm slowly collecting all the past David Gray albums and each one absolutely astounds me. I didnt think he could improve on 'A century ends' but 'Flesh' matches the energy and raw emotion and takes it in another direction completely.
Theres really too much to say about 'Flesh', you just have to lose yourself in the experience of it.
Without doubt though this guy is one of, if not, THE most talented singer song writers in the world. His music fuels my soul!
