Amazon.co.uk Review
Having the vocal skills to be able to sing the phonebook doesn't necessarily mean that one should. Over the course of his last few albums, singer extraordinaire Luther Vandross has been saddled with material not nearly as magnificent as his silken, impeccably romantic voice. Luckily for fans of Luther, and for anyone who hungers for grown up polished R&B/pop, the king of the love song is back. Though nowhere near his early classics, this eponymous release is definitely his best since 1991's "Power of Love". From aching ballads to up tempo finger poppers, Luther lets the magic of his supple voice weave a spell. Even if his chart-topping days are behind him, Vandross' ability to croon is firmly in effect. Solid and satisfying. --Amy Linden
CD Description
For his self-titled debut on J Records, Clive Davis's post-Arista venture, Luther Vandross manages to incorporate enough contemporary production touches to keep himself sounding current, without abandoning the old-school style that made him a star in the '80s. Vandross is the original R&B love man--he's been practicing his singular brand of soul and sensuality since most of today's mack daddies were in short pants, and his experience is apparent here.
Instead of the full-on approach of an R. Kelly, Vandross is content to let his voice glide gently across a subtle bed of funky guitars and keyboards, issuing a quiet-but-confident invitation to love. The melodic hooks that are intrinsic to the album's arrangements (production chores are ably handled by Davis and Vandross) leap out just enough to pull the listener into the music. Once immersed in Luther's world, you'll likely be focused largely on the man's powerful voice and tasteful, emotive singing; that's what it's all about anyhow.

...and the legend grooves on!!
Ok, since I bought this album, my car 10-cd changer has been a "tad" redundant. It takes me an hour and a quarter to get to work each morning, but I still can't get enough of it!
Each track has it's own style. Some new flava hits your ear, everytime you move on to the next stunning tune.
It will appeal to old "Luther lovers" and the new "Luther Virgins".
At first, he comes atcha' with smooth RnB vibes from the track "Can I take you out", then he bags it up old school style with "Love Forgot".
Definetly worth buying, I'd say!
He's BAAAAAAAACK!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm listening to this album as I write this...one of several times that I've heard it in the week that I've received it. I can't stop listening to it. It's definitely a great return to form, while staying current with the current R&B/Hip-Hop styles, and still remaining unmistakably Luther. His trademark voice and lush arrangements are just as strong as ever.
Some of my favourite highlights are, as with most of Luther's albums, the cover songs. This time, he does TWO Burt Bacharach songs...Any day Now, and Are You There (With Another Guy). Like other cover songs that he does, he totally reinvents the song without taking away from the original essence from the original version. He's definitely one of the very few (and I don't use that lightly) that can do that with a cover song.
My personal favourite is "Love Forgot". I love this song, and it brings back the kind of ballad that he did in the 80s and early 90s albums that he did with Marcus Miller and co. There are several songs on there that use the same crew that he usually uses throughout the albums over the years, in addition to a lot of newer producers and writer, which end up bringing a nice blend of old and new.
So, in closing, I definitely have been a fan of Luther's for years, going back to Never Too Much in 1981. And I would have to say that Luther's voice, style, and demeanour on his albums are just like fine wine...they get better with age. This album is further proof to that adage.
Luther's back and is still simply awesome
Luther's new offering is another good compilation of songs. My personal favourite tracks on the album are Take You Out and I'd Rather, powerful lyrics coupled with Luther's silky and soulful voice. The album is a most for the Luther Vandross fans but may not be everyone's cup of tea but I highly recommend it.
