Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Resist is the first full length album from Kosheen, the Bristol massive who have been around for over two years with a string of dancefloor classics, including "Slip & Slide (Suicide)" and "Hide U". The singles are featured, along with other sublime electronic breakbeat tracks and drum 'n' bass torch songs, on their debut album. Darren Decoder and Markee Substance are the production merchants, while singer/songwriter Sian Evans has raided her mother's Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell collection to come up with songs that combine traditional tunes with state-of-the art beats. In a warm, grainy voice she sings about urban relationships--being cool, being wanted, being watched, being saved. Kosheen are the drum 'n' bass act most likely to achieve that elusive crossover status. Compulsive. --Lucy O'Brien

Customer Reviews

An excellent mixture of drum & bass and breakbeat5
This album is excellent and extremely appealing to listen to. The songs are all impeccably produced with some seriously solid beats and breaks. The combination of drum & bass and breakbeats makes for interesting listening, and the album never bores for one moment. Sian Evans voice is gorgeous too and compliments the tracks perfectly, finding a balance between agressive and soft throughout. The slower tracks have slight overtones of Portishead and even Morcheeba in the upbeat sections, while the drum & bass tracks have some hard beats reminiscent of Grooverider/Optical. What makes this album standout though is the songwriting, and there are some really melodic and catchy tracks on this album. Choice songs are: Hide U, Slip & Slide, Face In A Crowd, and Gone, although literally every track has something to offer. In conclusion highly recommended, 5 stars!

Great vocals and production - but overall great songs5
A lot of albums I've bought aren't as totally satisfying as I would have liked. This gets pretty close. Production wise, this is flawless - the use of unconventional sounds mean that this will keep your ears entertained for a long while to come. If you're like me and get bored by hearing the same bass, synth and string sounds through an album, you'll be pleasantly surprised here. The vocals are really nice, sitting somewhere between PJ Harvey, Sia Furler of Zero 7, Dido, and Zoe Johnston (If that's at all possible!) It's the actual songs though which really make this a good listen - a combination of drum and bass and breakbeat. which retain a good song structure throughout. Outstanding tracks for me are probably Hide U, Slip & Slide, Face in a Crowd (simply brilliant chorus), Pride and Hungry - but to be honest there's not a duff track to be found. If there was one criticism it would be the length of some of the tracks. I just wanted some of the tracks to start and end with less haste. Because of this it's probably fair to sum this up as 'intelligent underground pop music for the discerning listener' - sounds good eh?!? If you like Lamb, Zero 7, Bent, Peshay, PJ Harvey, Faithless, Goldfrapp etc then I see no reaon why you won't enjoy this. So buy it!

Brilliant pop meets Drum'n'Bass5
This debut album from Kosheen is, to be frank, quite wonderful. Drum'n'Bass is what they are considered to be, but just about every track on this album has pop running through it. Hardcore D'n'B fans will probably not find this particularly satisfying, unless they love pop music as well, but many people will. As this album has the remix of "Hide U" that was released as a single, do not expect many of the other songs to be in the same vein. That was a House tune, more or less, and that's not what this album is about. The original version is more representitive of what it's really like.
Certainly, going by the "Hide U" remix, I would never have bought this album. It was a good song, but not enough to convince me. Then, however, came along the absolutely brilliant "Catch" and "Hungry". These are fabulous pop songs with great melodies; definite album highlights, but there's more where that came from. If you loved those two, you really shouldn't be disappointed as many of the tracks are catchy and make you want to dance, with great vocals from Sian. "Face In A Crowd" (which really deserves to be a single) and "Cover" are particularly excellent.
The single "Harder", released soon, gives an indication of the other side of this album. It's a much more chilled, relaxed affair, but no worse for it. The song is simply gorgeous, and there are plenty of others like that, almost haunting in a way. "I Want It All" and the title track, "Resist" are fine examples. Admittedly, a couple tend to drag on a bit and can get repetitive, but this isn't a major or frequent occurence here.
Basically, if you have liked all singles released from "Resist" so far, you can't go wrong. With 15 tracks (16 if you include the intro) it's a truly enjoyable listen.
