Superb...5
Phil Beer shows just how successful a man can be without mainstream coverage or million pound record sales.

Disc 1 (Hard Hats) showcases the harder, more rock-orientated side of Phil's playing but still with a strong folk sound - Chance features some searing guitar work coupled with Phil's ever-brilliant fiddle work.

Disc 2 (The Works) contains some marvelous trad instrumentals with a sprinkling of Phil's own compositions. The medley of Staten Island and Soldier's Joy proves that it IS possible to dance to folk music.

The two albums compliment each other extremely well, with Phil switching effortlessly between a mind-bogglingly extensive array of instruments (everything from guitar, mandolin and fiddle to drums, bass and banjo).

Anyone just getting into folk for the first time should make this their first port of call; and any seasoned fans who haven't already would be doing themselves a great favour if they added this to their collection.

Added to that, if you get to see Phil live, he's also a very nice bloke...
