Yoga - Learn Yoga
I agree with others that this is a good workout and that the poses are well explained etc. I do find the instructors somewhat annoying - particularly Louisa. Louisa has this irritating habit whereby she makes a tut-like sound between each sentence and I find this, personally, extremely offputting. The instructors rarely smile and there appears to be a show-off quality to how they present themselves. This would be a fabulous production, if it were not for these issues. Hence, I have given the DVD 4 stars - based upon the workout alone.
Simple to follow from first viewing with excellent results.
There is nothing to offend in this simply produced DVD. It moves at a gentle pace, is clear and easy to follow. I am a beginner and feel very comfortable at the level at which it is set, however equally I believe I could continue to practice yoga regularly over the next few years and there would be enough of a challenge to keep me satisfied for the rest of my yoga life.
I can feel the benefits immediately and the following day can feel the effects of toning too.
I look forward to my yoga sessions and find this an ideal way to work on body and spirit in my ever increasingly demanding and busy days!
Clear demonstrations, great instructors, and challenging
This is the third Yoga DVD I've tried, and by far my favourite.
I've been working with the Leah Bracknell 'Yoga and You' DVD, which is really great for absolute beginners like myself a few months ago. It's a gentle introduction with the positions flowing into each other. I like it a lot. After a few months, though, I felt like I needed a greater challenge, and so I chose this DVD.
Firstly, there are no gimmicks. No stunning backdrops, no piping music, no celebrities; just two very good instructors with clear voices working in a clear space outside (with natural sounds in the background, like cicadas) or a studio inside.
Secondly, the positions do not flow seamlessly into each other. The instructors are instead intent on teaching you each position correctly and helping you build the stamina needed to hold them for extended periods of time. The instructors also give the Sanskrit name of each pose (as well as the English translations), which is a big plus for me since I am interested in learning the original names of the positions. They are also careful to give recommendations to people who can't complete the full position (like myself in some poses), which is sorely missing on other Yoga DVDs. This means that you can work safely towards your goal, without strain.
I'm relatively flexible and strong, but I am finding these a great challenge! The beginners section will keep me busy for a few months since it's so challenging, and then I can move onto the 'general class', which is also on the same DVD. That's a big appeal for me; that I can move from beginner to intermediate with the same DVD and instructors.
I heartily recommend this DVD to strong beginners and intermediates. If you're an absolute beginner, I think this might be too tough for you unless you're starting from a point of excellent flexibility and strength. It is well worth building up to, however, and very enjoyable. I don't feel as serene as I do after an easier class but I certainly feel calm, well-stretched, and as if I've worked hard without straining.
