ACTION IS MISSING BUT GOOD BIT WHEN TAKES ON WOODEN MEN
This is an average old style Chan film. He plays a monk who cannot speak. He gets taught Kung_Fu by a prisoner at the Shaolin Temple and he takes on the wooden men (which is great) to get out of the temple. Then the prisoner escapes and once Chan finds out he killed his father then there is only one outcome a fight to the death.
This is a slow film. If you want as much fight scenes as Drunken Master you won't get that. But the Wooden men scene is great it's like 100 men Chan takes on which is memorable. The first half of the film is boring but half way through when he takes on the Wooden men he gets out of the temple and is free. For the 2nd half it is much better. The end fight is great I'd say better than the end fight in Snake In The Eagles Shadow but the problem about this film is that there is only about 2 fights. I suppose this is better than getting Snake in The Eagles shadow because it is cheaper but if you see Snake In The Eagles Shadow the same price then go for that.
OLD!!!
This film is one of the oldest I've seen Chan star in. The Kung fu is fairly poor but the training sequences are excellent and the end fight scene is absolutely classic Chan.
A good buy all round.
classic movie but poor quality
It was the first movie I've seen with Jackie Chan ~10 years ago. It wasn't the one that made me a Jackie-fan - that was the Rumble in the Bronx and Frist Strike instead -, but I enjoyed to see an example of this classic shaolin/revenge genre.
Now after ten years I bought this DVD recently, and have seen it again. I wasn't disappointed with the movie itself - it is still seems to be an enjoyable classic, but just for the fans of the genre, or for the hardcore fans of Jackie Chan. Others beware! So the point is, it is classic because of it's style and because it have been made with Jackie Chan, who later became a legend.
One very important thing related to the DVD edition: it has very poor quality! Don't except a 'remastered' picture. And there's no widescreen: it's a 4:3 picture, with mono american dubbing (no original stream!). So just buy it for the movie itself, and not because it's in available on DVD, because it's not up to the DVD standards. If you have the VHS version already, you don't need to buy this.
