Marley's shot at the title4
This was the one which saw Bob Marley move rapidly from cult reggae hero with a few respected albums under his belt to global megastar. With this release he became "Mr Reggae" and the darling of mainstream summer radio in 1977. Reggae had successfully been delivered to the masses, and the tracks that did the trick come thick and fast on this album - "Exodus"; "Jamming"; "Three Little Birds"; "Waiting In Vain" and the instantly appealing "One Love". Add to that the intuitively seductive "Turn Your Lights Down Low" and you had an ideal recipe to catch the radio-listening, suburban young housewife market. However, as a true aficionado of Marley's output it is essential you give a listen to the old "Side One" of the album - the one nobody played ! This contains four great rootsy cuts in the mood of this albums's mighty predecessor, "Rastaman Vibration" - the broody "Natural Mystic"; the political "So Much Things To Say"; the somewhat sombre "Guiltiness" and the magnificent "The Heathen". These tracks are as much the essence of this album and of Marley himself as "Jamming" etc.

So, this album is not just Marley's "Thriller", "Born In The USA" or "Brothers In Arms" despite its numerous hit singles. Give its lesser-known cuts a chance and you will not be disappointed. There are also some great live tracks from the accompanying tour on CD two and also the mighty "Punky Reggae Party" which saw Marley join the punk/reggae crossover and namecheck The Clash, The Jam, The Stranglers and Dr. Feelgood.
