A compendium of the legendary Scottish stand-up’s finest live moments, Billy Connolly’s Greatest Hits takes us on an odyssey of ridiculous facial hair and fart gags that spans almost 25 years. We start in 1975 with the Big Yin sporting his famous outsize banana boots and follow our man as he matures from an endearing gag merchant into a skilful observational master. Connolly’s appeal has always been that of the engaging bloke down the pub: you don’t so much laugh along with the material as get caught up in the hysteria as tangents follow tangents and the plot is lost in a fit of giggles. Almost uniquely in the dark days of the mid 70s, Connolly always had a sense of decorum in his stage act, even when his material was predominantly about swearing, shagging and "jobbies". He was never hateful or motivated by prejudice, preferring instead to cast a bemused child’s eye upon the stupidity of the world. The highlights are gentle if occasionally crude: Billy’s guide to "more fulfilling masturbation", thoughts on plastic surgery and the evil of Toblerone. Billy even muses about ageing which is interesting as this video proves he’s been a gloriously overgrown teenager all along. --Ian Watson

The greatest living comedians best bits!
Billy Connolly may be pushing 60 but he certainly isn't turning into a cardigan wearing, pipe smoking, beige person as this DVD shows. If your an avid fan of Connolly then you'll love this, if you want to get into him but aren't sure where to start, this is your opportunity! From his early "Big Banana Feet" tour, right up to his last tour of Australia, you are assured a laugh a minute. The DVD isn't packed with special features, theres no multi camera angles or interactive naked Billy Connolly game, but that does'nt matter, it's the content that makes this DVD worth while and the content is hilarious! See his transition from a guitar playing joke teller to the greatest observational comic of any generation all in 2 and half hours and book a trip to casualty to get your split sides sewn up! This DVD will delight and offend in equal mesures and all the better for it!

he's the best comediant i 've ever seen
i'm studying English language and before I saw any of his shows, I found the Scottish accent very difficult to understand, but he uses the mimic and talk about every day things, and situations that may happend to you, so the only thing you can do is laugh and laugh till you find yourself laying on the floor, thinking your mouth it's going to hurt you next day. I recommended for everyone

Not as good as I had expected
This is a kind of career history, beginning with some of Billy's first stage appearances back in the 1970s. I did enjoy watching this DVD and maybe 2 stars is a bit harsh, but I was left with a slight feeling of having been conned into buying it. Many of the sketches & jokes seem a little tired now and it's not really the kind of DVD I would watch more than once. I should have stuck to watching those occasional reruns on UK Gold for free ...
