Amazon.co.uk Review
The Queen of Pop has done it again and offered her fans and music impresarios alike a musical performance to be remembered. Madonna: Drowned World Tour--filmed in her home town of Detroit on August 26, 2001--is an amazing pop concert and a visually stunning modern-dance and multi-media piece encompassing all the recent incarnations of this chameleon-like performer. Never one to shy away from championing new styles, both in clothes and music, Madonna is still as raunchy as she was on her Erotica tour, but the Drowned World Tour also offers a much more effeminate and intelligent side to her performance. This time we see a Geisha/Japanese performance during "Frozen" and a jokey southern-belle line-dancing romp during "Don't Tell Me".
The monarch of performance has also discovered the best way to undergo an elaborate costume change without keeping your audience waiting--simply ply them with stunningly directed music videos on a multitude of screens and hang two solitary male dancers upside down to perform feats of dance perfection. This truly impressive show holds as much for Madonna fans as it does for anyone who is interested in studying modern performance and dance routines--and Madonna is certainly well versed enough to teach in this field with almost 20 successful years in the business. The Drowned World Tour--rumoured to be her last live show--goes to prove that Madonna still reigns supreme.
On the DVD: Although the special features are hardly a ray of light--simply an impressive photo gallery and some Web links--the picture and sound on this DVD are excellent. As a champion of all things new Madonna's DVD uses a picture perfect format of 4:3, and superb sound quality: with a choice of Dolby Digital 2.0, 5.1 and DTS 5.1 you'll feel like you're at the concert in a prime seat. Another impressive feature is the ability to view the song lyrics, allowing you to strut around your living room like a prima donna with this glamorous version of Karaoke! --Nikki Disney

YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR........
The Drowned Tour 2001 was fantastic. I was there. 4th July, 2001. Breathtaking, exciting, scary, amazing, awesome, the list could go on. Madonna flies, becomes a rock chick, a geisha, a ghetto fabulous star, a country girl, again the list is endless. From the very beginning, Drowned World Subsititute for love, you know this will be a night / DVD you will never forget. Madonna zooms through Impressive Instant, Candy Purfume Girl, Beautiful Stranger, Ray of Light effortlessly. The scenery, costumes and simply MADONNA are amazing. Then the geisha, strange, haunting songs such as Paradise (not for me), Frozen, Nobody's Perfect, and Mer Girl, are all fantastic. Madonna flys and shoots her husband, both shocking, but unmissable. Then Don't Tell Me, I deserve It, The Funny Song, Human Nature, Secret, during the now fashionable Country and Western section. Madonna rides a bull, and "techno line-dances" as one newspaper put it. Then the Latin section, La Isla Bonita, a Spaniosh What It Feels Like For A Girl, and more. Then the GHETTO FABULOUS stunning end. Her best songs, Holiday, which really got the cropwd going, as if they weren't hyper enough already, and Music as a breathtaking encore. This is amazing, and you MUST experiance Madonna at her Best! Buy this no, you won;t be dissappointed!
A Drowned DVD Experience
I saw Madonna's Drowned World Tour in Boston last August and just purchased the DVD last night. Although the video does a fairly good job of bringing home the show, it does not capture the live experience as effectively. The charged atmosphere and brilliant colors of the light show are muted here. However, I can now appreciate other details (costumes, facial expressions, etc.) that were missed before thanks to the many close-ups and camera angles. As for Madonna herself I find she's not quite as enthusiastic or as interactive as she was when I saw her in The Blond Ambition Tour, but the entertainment she gives us is still first-rate. From the physically demanding stunts to the guitar playing to the Latin-sung "What It Feels Like For a Girl", Madonna still has what it takes to put on one of the best shows this side of the 21st century.
As Helen from Big Brother 2 would say, "OH - MY - GOD!"
Fabulous. Fabulous. Fabulous. The tour to end all tours, captured on DVD for you to enjoy forever. A stunning 42 year old mum from Detroit, Michigan shows her twenty-something counterparts a thing or two about the industry she has helped to shape.
From the spine chilling opening of "Drowned World / Substitute for love" to the outstanding finale of "Music", this will not disappoint! Even though it is full of mostly new material, my parents loved it, and they haven't even heard most songs from her multi platinum albums "Ray Of Light" and "Music".
For those of you who went, you will recall one of the best nights of your life. To those who didn't, this is the only opportunity you will have to try to live the moments that changed my life forever.
What can I say but "Buy it! Buy it Now!" It promises to be the best purchase you will make this year!! Or possibly this decade!
