Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
These days she's fodder for tabloids and late-night comics, but way back in the 1990s Mariah Carey reigned as one of the world's bestselling female performers. This two-CD Greatest Hits collection offers up chart-topping evidence why, for better or worse, Mariah's five-octave, pop/R&B styling set the diva standard. Culled from her five albums on Sony, (before signing to Virgin), and you get all the facets of her platinum-plus sound. From the soulful smoulder of her 1990 debut "Vision of Love" (still one of her best tracks), to the coyer than thou duet with Jay Z ("Heartbreaker"), Carey thrills, trills and hits notes that only canines comprehend. Fans will gobble this collection up but inclusion of some of Carey's more adventurous remixes (eg: the Puffy produced "Fantasy", featuring ODB) might have made this package more noteworthy. --Amy Linden

The Past and Predictable future?
As Carey faces an uncertain future we are reminded of just why she was the top selling female artist of the 90's.
This greatest hits compilation could easily be missed by fans, considering the #1's compilation (which covers much of the same ground) was only released in 1999. However, after just a glimpse of the tracklisting you realise just how much impact Carey had on the musicworld during the 90's.
Carey showcases her raw talent and naiveity on early tracks such as 'Vision of Love', 'Hero' and 'Dreamlover' pleasing both consumers and record co. executives while gaining momentum and credibilty. Restraint, diversity and independence shines through further into the CD with more R&B influenced tracks ('Honey' and 'Heartbreaker') while duets with Whitney Houston, Boys II Men and Luther Vandross exhibits her might within the Pop/R&B genre.
This Greatest Hits compilation displays Careys graduation from Pop Princess to R&B Diva. Yet she is still able to shift effortlessly from slick, hook-filled R&B tracks like 'Fantasy' to powerful ballads such as ''My All'. Even if you're not a fan of her music there are songs here that you can't help but remember and hum along to - despite all efforts to the contrary. Fans of old and new are treated to a double CD filled with catchy pop-tunes, commanding ballads and smooth R&B grooves.
Mariah Carey found a formula that worked. Although she currently struggles to find a place which both pleases herself and the record-buying public there is no doubting the firm grasp she has... or had... on the charts from 1990 and into the new millenium.

A platinum collection of hits
This album is a collection of the highlights of Mariah's 11 yr reign as one of the world's leading divas. It may not make much of a difference to the die-hard Carey fan, but it is an essential for any admirer who doesn't own all her previous albums.
The 2 disc set contains all her biggest hits and will take you on a musical journey through the 1990's from early classics like 'Vision of Love' and 'I Don't Wanna Cry'(both songs still sound so amazing) to "middle Mariah" hits like 'Dreamlover', 'Anytime You Need A Friend' and 'One Sweet Day' to her funkier hip-hop tunes from the late '90s like 'Honey', 'Sweetheart' and 'Heartbreaker'.
One of the reasons why this album seems to be slightly better than her previous Greatest Hits package 'No. 1's' is that all her singles are included, not just the number one hits. Also, you have the singles from the 'Rainbow' album which are real gems, especially the ballads.
All in all, a nice well-rounded package which is a good showcase statement for what made Mariah Carey one of the biggest selling artists of the last decade.
Mariah Mania!!!
What is left to be said about the superlative Mariah Carey, except that this is truly the greatest, greatest hits album ever! If like me you are constantly astonished by her extraordinary vocal range, the stunning high notes, the tonsil tearing coloratura and phenomenal power, you will love it. Indeed, half way through this and you will believe that other divas like Whitney Houston sound more like Sonia in comparison! Particularly good is emotions. Totally reminiscent of the late great and almost as high, Minnie Ripperton.
Enjoy a fantastic package, from the the greatest singer on the planet.
