Digital Connectivity is great for die hard Fear Factory fans
I've been a HUGE Fear Factory fan since "Soul a new machine" and I thought the DVD was great. Why only 4 stars you ask? Unfortunately alot of the early live footage (and some of the older stuff) is camcorder footage and the sound and images are terrible (Burton mentions this in the sleeve biography). I have never enjoyed the FF remixes and, if memory serves, only 2 of the bonus tracks are not remixes, but that will depend on your taste. On the upsides, the DVD is an excellent time-line type story on the life of FF, including all videos and member feedback, broken down by 'album chapters'. The biography (sleeve) is great, Burton providing excellent insight into the history and life of the band. Pity about the split :-(
RIP
I'm writing this just minutes after hearing of the band's breakup and in a way it's a very fitting way of looking back at the band's very fruitful ten year history.
the earliest material showing their performance at the dynamo festival shortly after the release of Soul Of A New Machine (with original bassist andrew shives) and the last showing their performance the 2001 Reading Festival (which i had the pleasure of attending myself). it shows an equal insight through all the stages of their career and shows footage promos from each stage. it is also a vital resource to track the extremity of burton's undercut in the earlier years (after close analysis, i found it to be peaking in the Self Bias Resistor video).
with FF being my favourite bands i find this an enjoyable DVD to watch, though my three main complaints about this are
1. the crappy audio quality on the demanufacture/obsolete live tracks
2. towards the end it gets worringly close to being more of a 'rockumentary', showing their 'new found maturity' and so forth. i was a huge fan of their final album 'digimortal' but this is just cringeworthy....
3. i'd have preferred more interview/backstage footage than there is, most of the title seems to revolve around life footage/promos, while i can totally see the relevance in this i'd rather learn more about the band than watch them playing Dog Day Sunrise for instance...
flawed, but a very good way to wrap up their career.
i look forward to hearing concrete.....
First DVD is a great success
Fear Factory have produced an excellent DVD which shows how the band have evolved over the last 10 years. The live footage is really good and it shows rare clips of when Andrew Shives was the bassist. I would recommend this DVD to any Fear Factory fan as it has loads of extras and really good fan material. It's a really good DVD
