Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Stealth is once more the name of the game in Project IGI 2. It's set against the backdrop of Russia, Libya and China's underworld and you once again play David Jones chasing military secrets across eastern Europe.

Taking place over three linked campaigns, the individual missions progress in depth and skill to ease you slowly into the game. It has huge levels and plenty of bad guys that you'll have fight; you'll soon have your work cut out.

Graphics have progressed from those on the original, but not really in leaps and bounds and not in line with the rest of the games in this genre. Sounds however, now play a major role in how you play. Make too much noise and the bad guys come running, guns blazing.

What is new and most welcome is a multiplayer element, something that was sorely missed in the first game. The game supports up to 16 players online, but the advantage over the usual range of multiplayer games is the introduction of a cash system. If you want a weapon you'll have to pay for it and the more times you die the less cash you'll have available. This is a great tactical idea and makes you really think about respawning rather than, as usual, jumping back in and getting killed.

On its own, this game offers plenty to the stealth fan. Yet with the games market now well supplied with stealth titles you can't help but think that while the original was ahead of its time, this game is a just a tiny bit late for the party.

Yes, the levels are large and yes, the AI is very impressive--guards can hear you coming a mile off if you are charging around like a bull in a china shop--but it doesn't bring anything new to the genre. Unfortunately, in a genre that has been dominated by games such as Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid, anything new can't just be good, it has to be very impressive. Unfortunately Project IGI 2 is good but not special. –-Jason Denwood

Manufacturer's Description
Players assume the role of British covert operative David Jones, a former SAS soldier now working for the secret U.S. military organization codenamed ‘IGI’. Set directly after the events of the original game, Jones undertakes top-secret military operations by infiltrating airbases, harbors, and secret terrorist installations located deep within enemy territories. IGI 2: Covert Strike boasts an action-packed single player campaign, featuring enhanced AI, a diverse range of weapon types and a newly implemented save system. Additionally, IGI 2 will offer intense team based multiplayer action. With an immersive storyline spanning across China, Russia and Libya, IGI 2 delivers a thinking-gamer’s first-person shooter. Each action packed mission expands the plot and is driven forward with impressive animated cut scenes that continue to absorb the player in the game’s carefully constructed narrative.

Best. Game. Ever.5
This, in my opion, is the game of the year. I realise its only februrary, and there are lots more games due out this year (including Deus Ex2), but I really don't see how any of them are going to top this.

Personally I disagreed with people who said the original lacked a save game feature. Fortunatly in adding a save game feature to IGI2 they have made it into an in game feature (you use your map computer to upload mission data to IGI hq). The number of times you can save varies by difficulty, and is represented in game by the battery power available on the map computer.

Maybe the game is a little short (around 10 hours single player), but the multiplayer will certainly add many hours of game play. And the multiplayer is excellent, its every thing that counter-strike should have been. Each map contains a mission that one of the two sides (terrorist/IGI operatives) is trying to achive, whilst the other is trying to stop them.

If you like action/stealth first person shooters, this is the game for you. Just remember, the most obvious route is not always the best :-)

Brilliant if you see it, then buy it5
I thought IGI 1 was good, but this totally blows it away. Same principle as 1 but a lot more realistic. Firstly you are not superhuman anymore, you can only carry, 1 main weapon, 1 pistol, 3 grenades and a knife and that is your lot. The single play game is difficult and needs a lot of brain power to tackle the situation but if you think your strategy through then you should win, but not the first time. Accuracies are realistic. You cant shoot as accurately standing up as you can lying down, and dont even bother when you are running. AI is a little strange though. If you hide in a bush (no matter the size of the bush your legs could be poking out of the back of the bush) then the enemy will walk right past you. keep your cool and pick your shots. The AI very quickly determines your firing position, so make each shot count, you dont want them to run around wounded and setting the alarms off.

The multiplay is cool. Different to so many games I have played
you start with a basic pistol, and by achieving objectives or by frags you earn money. This allows you to go to the basecamp shop and buy better kit, weapons etc.

Overall the game is brilliant, buy it, this has been professionally put together, not thrown together, and the professionalism shines throughout.

This is a great game!5
I have already said elsewhere that this is a great standalone game, full of nail-biting action and very difficult to complete. However, on Multiplayer it is in a different league entirely. A wide array of brilliant weapons, true weapon physics (eg powerful weapons really do shoot through walls and doors) with a clever gimmick of having to accumulate cash to buy the more interesting weapons (like Half-Life). With a dedicated community committed to developing the game and more maps being added daily, this is an essential online gamer's investment.
