Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
Despite only reaching the UK Top 40 on two measly occasions, obdurate Belfast punks Stiff Little Fingers retain a sizeable following two decades after they first appeared on the John Peel Show and continue to prove a viable live proposition. This is due in no small part to the reputation of those classic early singles "Suspect Device" and "Alternative Ulster", each an incendiary blast of political anger and teenage disaffection meriting a place in any serious punk collection. Naturally, those tracks, together with the angst-tainted autobiography of "Wasted Life" and "Gotta Getaway" form the highlights of this three-CD anthology, which rounds up all the band's singles and B-sides.
The tracks include include 1991's banned 45 "Beirut Moon", a flimsy Iron Maiden soundalike which dealt with the kidnapping of journalist John McCarthy in the Lebanon. Like compatriots the Undertones, Stiff Little Fingers floundered once they moved away from their original formula, experimental forays into pop and reggae in the 1980s proving largely uninspiring., At least the third disc, a passionate singalong live set featuring the band's most cherishable moments of energetic spleen (previously available as the album See You Up There) goes some way to explaining their enduring appeal. --Kevin Maidment
Customer Reviews
Awesome
I actually stumbled across punk. I knew I didn't like pop or Rap. They all seemed to lack meaning and emotion. Rock as well was only good, not great. I heard Alternative Ulster and Pretty Vacant on the internet by sample. And that was that. The Stiff little fingers are amazing and this C.D. is outstanding, containing all their best songs. Both the old classics like Suspect device and Alternative Ulster and the surprisingly good new ones like Cant believe in you and Harp. Trust me you want this C.D. its possibly the best band to ever come out of Ireland and one of the best classic punk bands of the era
Belfast's finest flower
many a fine flower has found its way out of ireland but none have endured the passing of time like SLF...their fans of 25 years ago r still fans and they in turn r influencing younger punks in2 listening 2 SLF...with this anthology u get all the good stuff from the last 25+ years...disc 1 is full of the really early stuff...full of power lyrics and power guitars...it also contains the 1st song i ever heard SLF do and that was white xmas on the john peel show...it was a battle of the bands and SLF won it at a canter...disc 2 has a few songs from the much underated album "now then"...it also has the once banned "bierut moon" which just calls out 2 b played loud...the end of disc 2 is somewhat of a drinking mans listen but u 4 get this knowing that disc 3 is just round the corner...SLF have always been at their best live...disc 3 gives u them playing brixton and u wont b disappointed...i last heard them in a field in 2002 at the wickerman festival and they were still as good as they were 20 odd years ago...only more refined but jake burns vocals never lose that "lets take on the world" appeal...if u have heard a few SLF songs in the past i suggest that u leave buying all thier albums and buy this...its a pure flower amoungst a lot of music weed out there 2day...
bloody good not bloody sunday
If you do not own "all the best" by SLF's then this box set is a MUST BUY. It basically contains all their best songs from "Alternative Ulster" to the much covered "Gotta Getaway" aswell as allowing you to listen to several live tracks. This band is unlike many others because of the emotive lyrics which really parallel with the bands feelings, in other words, they play about how they feel.In most cases they play aggressively. Forget buying any other of their albums and concentrate on this, worth its weight in gold.
