"Colin McRae Rally 2.0 is by far one of the best racing games ever to arrive on the GBA. 94%."
Manufacturer's Description
With realistic physics, cars that react as they would in the real world slightly losing control after landings and sliding because of momentum as you turn, Colin McRae Rally 2.0 for the Game Boy Advance is a virtual tour-de-force of rally racing action. Players must learn to master the balance between throttle and brakes while utilizing sliding techniques to cover ground as fast as possible.

The best rally effort yet on GBA
If you're a rally fan then you've probably already picked up either V-Rally 3 or GT Advance 2 for your GBA, both of which beat McRae out of the gate a few months ago. And how many handheld rally games do you need to own, really? Well 'more than one' would seem to be the answer because Colin Mcrae 2.0 is the pick of the bunch so far in terms of raw gameplay and lasting appeal.
So far in the GBA's short life racing games have, to my knowledge, all used sprite based cars on either 3D or Mode 7 tracks, something which works great for an arcade style racing experience but is a little lacking in terms of realism. Here you'll notice immediately that the cars are fully 3D allowing for much greater handling and control as well as realistic physics (although I had trouble actually flipping my car over, I'm pretty sure it can be done). The cars slide and bounce in accordance with the laws of science, making tweaking the suspension and tyres much more important than on sprite-based engines, something car nuts will appreciate immensely. It also allows your car to gather filth, a nice graphical touch.
Aside from this though the game's graphics aren't exactly staggering. The Mode 7 tracks, frankly, look pretty nasty but on closer inspection feature a good number of functional objects (tress and fences and such) to interact with. Those who judge books by their covers and games by their engines would undoubtedly plump for V-Rally's impressive 3D courses over McRae's but this would be a mistake. Whereas the primary focus of the V-Rally game engine was to look nice, the McRae team concentrated on a solid gaming experience and that is exactly what they have delivered. Great handling and customisation options, over forty tracks with varying terrain, five licensed vehicles and a selection of different game modes (including an arcade mode where you can race against other vehicles in either single or multiplayer).
Sound wise you're greeted with the predictably low quality video game music but thankfully this doesn't feature in the actual races. Instead your helpful co-driver Nicky Grist informs you of the upcoming turns and hazards which is a great feature, what with the GBA's occassional visibility issues.
The only real downsides are the menu system, which is difficult to navigate and horrible to look at, and the game's ranking charts which are far from adequate, giving only bare bones information about the player's achievements. Also the single-cart multiplayer is a little limited but then it is single-cart.
Overall though this is an outstanding game. If you have yet to purchase a rally game or were as disappointed with V-Rally as I was then this is well worth a look and just about edges out GT Advance 2 as the handheld's best rally experience so far.
Colin has outdone himself on this one....
This is a great game. I failed numerous subjects at uni as a result of playing the first installment on the PS1. When I bought a GBA, the first game I bought was Colin McRae Rally 2.0. I wasn't expecting much from a handheld, but I was pleasantly surprised. All the features from the PS are there, including commentary, all the cars, bonus cars and special stages. It has a great single-console multiplayer mode where you take it in turns to do a stage. Great for killing times with a few mates. I was never really into the v rally-style arcade mode but its there if its your sort of thing. About my only gripe is I wish there were more rallies.
The scenery graphics are pixelled, but adequate. The car graphics are fantastic: The car gets dirty on gravel tracks, brake and reverse lights come on. I haven't played any other racing games on this console but I'm sure I will struggle to find a better one. Highly recommended.
Unbelievable
What a game! This game tests the gba to it's limits and succeeds without a question of a doubt. If you like a serious racing game rather than a platform charachter sitting in a slow as hell go kart then go no further. There are loads of cars to choose from and when a rally is won loads to unlock too keeping you coming back for more. The handling is great with no slow down whatsoever each surface handles accurately and differently making you look forward to the next rally and with a great 2 player mode too, you could do a lot worse than saying good by! to run of the mill kart games and get yourself a serious racing game!!!!
