The Roots of Gypsy Punk
Most of you will be looking at this album because you've got hold of the incomparable Gypsy Punks - Underdog World Strike and thought "I NEEEED more of this band NOW!". Voi-La Intruder dates from 2002, and is a bit like going back in time, not least because that's exactly what you're doing.
It's more folky, more mainstream, more quiet, and a bit more of a "concept album in two movements" than Gypsy Punks - but only in the context of that album being the wildest maelstrom of heavenly mash ever to emerge from the Ukrainian diaspora - or indeed anywhere in the world - in the last 15 years.
There's some stunning individual tracks - "Greencard Husband" and the closing 7 minutes plus of "Against the Nature" amongst them. But my favourite is a duet with Sally Norvell entitled "God-like" which moves effortlessly from its hymnish opening verse into a self-flagellating abusefest that puts the exchange of Kirsty & Shane in their classic Fairytale into the shade. Combine that with the original recording of "Start Wearing Purple" (reminiscent of hearing London Calling on the Vanilla Tapes) and you have an album that won't disappoint.
