Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
The mother of all jazz vocal groups is not really a jazz vocal group at all. As if their 11 Grammy nominations in seven different categories don't underscore that point enough, Take Six's tenth album, Beautiful World, is a collection of very-well-known pop hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s, all with a spiritual message. Their complex vocal harmony arrangements, like that on the traditional tune, "Wade in the Water", have always attracted the attuned ear of jazz fans, while also bringing in people who like all kinds of music, from gospel to funk to pop. Even hip-hoppers recognise how the group has influenced the neo-soul movement with fresh sounds such as those on "Fragile" and "A Lovely Day". The composers of the tunes on the album--co-produced by the group and bassist Marcus Miller--are as familiar as the songs themselves, from Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield and Donny Hathaway to Sting, Peter Gabriel and Donald Fagen, which makes this maybe the most accessible Take Six album ever. Even taking into consideration their varied history and lofty record sales, Beautiful World is quite a remarkable disc. --Mark Ruffin

Customer Reviews

As expected!5
At last - a new album from take 6!!
No surprises here - Take 6 are THE band!
As usual tight harmonies, fantastic lead vocals and great songs. Unlike other Take 6 albums, however, this one is a collection of great classics such as Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" and Stevie's "Love's in Need" instead of more original cuts, but it's still all delivered in Take 6's unique style. A must have for any decent Take 6 fan - but what makes this stand out as a serious project worthy of parting with cash, is the production courtesy of Marcus Miller. One couldn't really go wrong with this collaboration and as you would expect, the album is peppered with Marcus Miller's bass licks and his trademark bass clarinet. Sheer Brilliance!
