Album Description
The Spectrum Series: The over commercialisation of dance music has led Spectrum Compilers to search for something more substantial, more genuine than the ever-shifting ephemera that passes for DJ Culture. The current endless search for the roots of house music & the decades of club culture most of us missed out on has its best ever instalment coming soon Disco Spectrum III: Representing the dance music of the late 70's and early 80's that was played in clubs, not on the radio. Therefore it does not contain the oftenrecycled KC, Bee Gees, or Village People. These songs didn't make the Top 40 or the Top 100 for that matter, but were beloved by the denizens of the clubs that set the trends. Joey Negro has teamed up with close friend Sean P; (one time Kiss FM producer, compiler of numerous compilations, sleeve note writer and most helpful talking disco encyclopedia on the planet) bringing us their latest collection of underground gems This music is the past, present, and the future. From the wavering falsetto vocals of Eddie Kendricks to the underrated Motown artist Syreeta, the album contains names we recognise such as Denise La Salle who reached Top Ten in the UK with My Toot Toot (1985) to those who have vanished like Koxo. Crate diggers will be relieved to find Rene & Angela, I love You More remastered & cut for 12 pleasure saving themselves the price of the original on the collectors market. In the studio Dunn Pearson is an accomplished pianist having produced, arranged, written and worked with such recording artists, as The O'Jays, Stephanie Mills, Teddy Pendergrass, Stevie Wonder, Roy Ayers, D'Angelo and he created a disco monster. Lenny Williams is best known as the lead singer of Tower of Power from 1972-75. He resurfaced in 1977, with production credits going to one Frank Wilson. Trainspotters will know that he made Do I Love You, the highest priced 7 single ever. Millions of words have been written about Disco, it is not going to lie down & die. Two music lovers have put there knowledge to the the best of use and allowed the true heroes of the movement to step out of the shadows once again.

Customer Reviews

Spectrum 3 is wicked!!!!5
Suprised that a couple of the reviews for this LP were saying it isn't as good as the previous ones in the series. Personally I think this is as least as good as Volume 1 and better than 2. You can't go wrong with tracks like Idris Muhammed "Could Heaven be like this" (sampled in Soul Providers "Rise") and BT Express "Does it Feel Good to you" - straight up classic disco cuts that still sound great today. There are many very rare records here and I'd wager 95% of them have never made it to CD before (not in my collection anyway). I like to be turned on to "new" old songs like Denise La Salle's "I'm so hot" - a great discovery for me. Where as Mandre's "Solar Flight" was a track I'd heard before but didn't know the title of (this was recently the inspiration for "Believe" by Soliders of Twilight).

On CD 2 we go into a mellower and jazzier mode with songs from Fever, Blair ("Nitelife" - what a tune!)and Universe City. If you want endless syndrums and obvious disco string lines then maybe this might not be your cup of tea (there is plenty of that on CD 1 anyway) but I found these laid back disco joints a real treat.

There has been some serious crate digging going on here from Sean/Joey and with it being a double CD there is a lot of music to take in but the overall quality here is excellent. This will be a CD I will be listening too for a very long time.

At last! A cure for the worn out disco compilations!5
Actually, this cd set is quite incredible, because it offers many
songs that were really only heard in clubs and not on the radio.
It features several songs which have never been released on cd.
It is nice to finally hear an album that isn't made up of the old disco standards which are on every disco compilation. "Somewhere Beyond" by Hi-Voltage is extraordinary and unbelievably hard to find, and is the best song on this album. I don't believe anyone who truly enjoys disco could be disappointed with this album due to the rarity of all of these songs. Give it a try!

Disappointing2
Compared to the rest of the Disco Spectrum Trilogy, this one doesn't bear up. Most of the songs on this collection I would describe as either early 80s dance, or Jazz-Funk instrumentals, not pure 1979-style disco the like of which I was hoping to hear.

For example, I wanted to hear songs in the same style as Gotta get your love on D.S.1 or Spread love and Welcome to the Disco on D.S.2 but sadly, there were no such songs - a couple of chic-styled songs that were okay.

I've bought all of Joey Negro's other Disco compilations, i.e. Mastercuts Classic Disco, Jumpin' 1 and 2, and Disco Spectrum 1 and 2, they were all listened to over and over again. I feel a bit let down, I trusted Joey to deliver the goods. Here's hoping for better next time!
