Awesome game - Especially if you like your conspiracy movies
If you had a ZX Spectrum in the eighties you might have heard of the game called 'Hacker'. I never had it, (because I couldn't afford to buy every game as a teenager), but I really liked the idea - all you started with was a prompt saying 'Log On'....and away you went! Well Uplink is a hacking game, but hacking like it is in the movies, with traces displayed across a map of the world (think Goldeneye) rather than hacking proper, which is a bit less graphic - I believe.
Uplink is a game for the fans of movies like Enemy of the State, or for gamers who liked the conspiracy element in Deus Ex.
You work for the shadowy Uplink Corporation as one of their agents, accepting missions to break into Banks, Servers, Criminal databases etc. If you do well, then you get money with which you can buy better software and hardware that will allow you to penetrate harder targets. but if you mess up, and your target traces you, then Uplink will deny all knowledge of you.
There is a conspiracy sub-plot running beneath the game which becomes clearer later on, but it is real good fun breaking into people's bank accounts or changing their social security status from 'employed' to 'deceased' to mess their lives up.
The only criticism I have of this game is that it is bugged in places, and Introversion have already released a patch, but this hasn't fixed them all yet. Don't let this put you off, though, as it has still managed to keep my interest.
It's hard to capture the suspense and satisfaction that this game delivers. Having read some of my own words, you could be forgiven for thinking, 'Breaking into bank accounts - yeah great', but this is definitely not just for geeks - My all time favourite game is unreal tournament, and this is completely different, but still a great game.
It's also a steal at this price, so trust me you won't be disappointed.
Then again, as it says on the box, Trust is a Weakness...
Not only a original idea but a brilliantly executed one
There are three reasons why you should buy this game. Firstly because it is based on an original and compelling idea, something all too rare in computer game industry. As a computer hacker operating through a shadowy company you can steal data and ruin lives using only your internet connection. As well as random acts of computer crime there is a an ongoing plot which draws you further into the game, and into a battle over the very future of the internet.
The second reason is that despite the good idea actually works as a game, which is probably even rarer. It feels realistic enough to suspend disbelief but is never so realistic that it becomes boring. Instead it is almost addictivly compelling. Outside the main plot there is almost unlimited freedom and there is certainly plenty to do. In short it has the thrill of real hacking without the moral and ethical problems or the threat of being arrested.
Finally you should buy Uplink because the warning beep, which increases in frequency as a system hunts you down, is undoubtedly in the top 5 most nerve racking sounds in computer gaming.
Brilliant Game
This is a brilliant and addictive game, the graphics are not the greatest, but that is for a reason, it sets the atmosphere just right. Coming from a relatively underground company, this should be hailed for its addictive gameplay, huge content and all its easter eggs.
This game is not very realistic towards hacking, but it carries more from the view of "movie hackers", with a good interface, and simple clicking to break into servers.
Although this shouldnt be complimented for its realism, it certainly should be for its gameplay.
