Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
With Be Not Nobody, her much-anticipated debut, ex-ballerina Vanessa Carlton more than makes good on the promise of her first single, "A Thousand Miles". Augmenting her classical training with a broad range of pop she soaked up playing New York City clubs, and listening to classic rock in her father's car, Be Not Nobody finds the phenomenon decorating her fierce piano playing with orchestration, guitars and percussion galore. "Prince" is sizzling and funky, while "Ordinary Day" displays a majestic grace and "Unsung" is a stomping blues-bar breakdown. Comparisons to Fiona Apple and Little Earthquakes-era Tori Amos (especially on the haunting "Sway" and "Wanted") are inevitable and justified. Yet Carlton sounds fresh, even on a menacing interpretation of the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black". With the exception of the anaemic ballad "Pretty Baby", this impressive debut makes a strong case that a new star has emerged. --Annie Zaleski

...welcome miss vanessa carlton5
...You know, everytime I buy a cd online I always check what people have bought as well as the album i am interested in. Like always i've found the artist links spot on owning all recordings from the list other than Jewel! The first time I heard a thousand miles i was busying myself with MTV providing background music-as soon as i heard that haunting piano intro i felt a shiver go down my spine, all of a sudden this song (only 20 seconds in!) was already having this effect which made me feel really emotional-and when i heard her voice i was so relieved that this was talent and wasn't about to be ruined by some vile tacky dance beat! Well as a proud owner of be not nobody i can recommend it to anyone who appreciates a beautiful talent. This young lady is not afraid of variance and her classical training only adds to her accomplishment on this debut. It is so hard sometimes to find somebody that sings her own words and isn't scared to release something different to the rest of the painfully similar mainstream trash that is constantly kicking about. A must for anyone who loves thoughtful lyrics, intense, charged music all sung to you by a beautiful young woman with a gorgeous, stunning voice.

Finally a new great american singasong writer5
Vanessa Carlton is only 21 years old but have already tried her talents as a ballarina and worked as a waitress on the lower part of Manhatten, N.Y., far from her childhood home in Pennsylvania. Thank God she, with the help of her father, realised that she could sing. After a year of working on material to this debut album she meet Ron Fair of A&M records and Jimmy Lovine of Geffen Records and this album could be completed. Be Not Nobody is a brilliant, personal and strong debut, with a handful of good, pop/rock songs carried by Vanessa's gifted and crystal clear voice and talent as a classical trained pianist. I was amazed and surprised by every single track from first song Ordinary Day to the Suzanne Vega inspired song Twillight. You can hear inspiration from Susanna Hoffs (voc. The Bangles) in her voice and a couple of hundres other female artist. Pretty Baby, probably the second single from the album, is a wonderful popballad, but performed with a strenght I haven't heard in a long, long time by any female singer. The debut album is an incredible, overwhelming first from this new artist.
The single from this album A Thousand Miles, flowing with lyrics, passion and ever changing rhythm could be this year's Grammy Award winning song in The USA. Buy this CD before your neighbours do, they want it too, believe me.

Graceful, haunting and uplifting. Be not nobody has it all!5
The songs on this album are all so different from each other, so there's a song for everyone on this outstanding CD. You can see Vanessa Carlton has put so much effort into singing, playing her piano and writing her songs and she deserves all the praise she can get. That's why I am going to review this album.
The album starts off excellently with Ordinary Day, which is very rousing. The build up of instruments is very creative and the strings have a virtuous role. The engaging lyrics of Unsung follow, which has a great beat combining the drums and the piano. Next is the excellent single A thousand miles, beautiful, flowing and very graceful. Pretty Baby, the not so well received tune of the album is next. It is quite light and easy going, but it doesn't really match up to the quality and spirit of the rest of the tracks on the CD. Rinse follows. This is so original and excellent, and the recorder and sitar give it extra power. I love the next one, Sway, which grew on me quickly a couple of times after I had first heard it. It has a superb build-up and crescendo nearish the end. The emotional and solemn Paradise follows, which is accentuated by Vanessa's rich vocals, and next is the distinct tune and beat of Prince. At number 9 is Paint it Black. Very dark, shadowy and rocky, it is an excellent version of the Rolling Stone's original. Wanted follows, which is so creepy and haunting and troubling, its fresh and interesting remix is at number 12. The album finishes superbly with the uplifting and peaceful Twilight which is so graceful. It has a very powerful build up of strings and vibes accompanied by some beautiful lyrics.
This is a top album by a very talented young artist, and anyone who liked A thousand Miles will love the other tracks on Be not Nobody, which has to be in any music lovers CD collection.
