the big chill does love you
Being a devotee of all things Big Chill, and still high on the happy feelings from attending Enchanted Garden 2002, I was really looking forward to something that would keep me happy until next year...and this really does.
Spread over two CD's this collection captures the Big Chill ethos and approach to music perfectly. The tracks featured here are of the highest quality. The glut of Ibifa based compilations has meant that finding beautiful and well-made chill out has been a challenge. But no need to worry now, as this eclectic collection has absolutely no ambient versions of poptastic trance choons; these are all intelligent, beautifully crafted, feel good vibes.
CD1 is the more upbeat sequence, represented with Kirsty Hawkshaw's "Fine Day" (re the "It's a fine day" sample that Opus 3 used) and the gentle deep house of Boomclick, which provides a funky, hip-waggling groove. Big Chill favourites Badmarsh & Shri chip in with a beatless sitar venture, nicely setting up another eastern influenced (down-tempo big beat) track by Robert Miles (yes, Robert Miles!!). Other highlights are the up and coming Ulrich Schnauss with a fairytale dream of a tune set to what sounds like a familiar kick drum (could it be Aerosmith "Walk this way" ?!). Cinematic Orchestra are always a welcome addition, and the romantic summer jazz of Koop nicely concludes the first CD.
CD2 is the far more chilled affair, perfect for kicking back and stretching out in the sun. Tracks that stand out are Pete Lawrence's Chilled By Nature, the echoing guitar rhythms of The Pirates, the fascinating hip hop/drum n bass hybrid of Hint, a swirling remix of the 10cc classic "I'm not in love", and the steel drum ditty "Saratoga Hornpipe".
To be honest some of the other Big Chill compilations were good but not great. This on the other hand is fantastic! It will have pride of place on my shelf along with other chilled classics like Café del Mar's 1 & 2, Global Communications 76:14, Air's Moon Safari, and the Orb's UFOrb. Buy it, listen to it, and love it, which is only fair as the Big Chill loves you!
The Big Chill Loves You
A beautiful album, superbly programmed and mixed by Big Chill supremo Pete Lawrence. As magical as their fantastic festivals this album is packed full of music you won't here anywhere else, a normal chillout album this isn't. The biggest names on here are thre likes of Koop, Badmarsh & Shri and Lamb, but while these deliver fantastic tracks it's the lesser known artists such as The Egg, Ashley Slater, Andrew Cronshaw and 11cc that really suprise and make this an album you need in your collection.
very cool indeed
I found a shop where the staff were in to chill stuff, and asked their advice. This CD was the result. I have bought a ton of awful music over the years, taking chances that seldom work out, because although my taste is broad, I am rather picky. However recent purchases of Dreadzone and a St.Germaine de Pres Cafe electro jazz compilation, and this CD, have gone a long way to restoring my enthusiasm. Great stuff, and because my original CD has annoying surface noise on it, I'm ordering another from Amazon today - it can't be bad if you buy two of something....
