jus chillin4
This is it, this is the must have soundtrack for the summers. Notting hill veterans Joey Jay and Norman have compiled a disc from roots classics, deep n deadly dubs and uplifting ska. the only thing this album lacks is a bit of dancehall but i still recomend you buy this album, get away from work, get into the sun, rap up your buds and lose yourself!!

A Fine Release4
This 2002 Trojan /Sanctuary Records release was apparently compiled by Joey Jay, brother and erstwhile sound companion to Norman Jay MBE, and therefore, unsurprisingly, it features 21 tracks selected by a man who can rightly claim to know authentic reggae music (artists featued include Delroy Wilson, Gregory Issacs, Dennis Brown and John Holt).

Broadly the music is taken from the 1970's with the most recent being taken from 1982 (there is a single track from 1963), and, given the period covered there is a clear 'conscious dimension' to much of the music chosen, concerned with articulating the social ills which afflicted the black community and their varied attempts to negotiate and overcome them. This does not mean that this collection is unlikely to appeal to those not sharing that specific heritage, rather it means that all of the tracks chosen are rather special. As the previous reviewer indicated the music covers dub and reggae but does not extend to dancehall - arguably because of the period covered and possibly because dancehall tends to be less concerned with social issues.

Unlike many other cds from this genre there are meaningful liner notes which are useful in directing the reader to other songs and material recorded by the artists featured, and this qualitative approach is also evident with the care which is apparent with the mastering of the cd.

I have stated before that reggae music is generally ill served by compilations, and so when a good quality collection is compiled with such care it should rightly receive praise. There is an authenticity about this cd that is often lacking, and it rightly deserves your attention.

Highly recommended.
