Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
After an awful lot of hype and far too many mentions of Moby being involved (he's not), Sophie Ellis-Bextor finally unveils her solo album Read My Lips. For a first time effort, it really isn't bad. It suffers from one too many fillers and the odd duff moment, but there's still much here to enjoy. Fans of "Groovejet" will be disappointed by the lack of jaunty Balearic disco, yet as a showcase for her petulant voice and charismatic demeanour it works just fine. Opener and first single, "Take Me Home" is a soaring, camply infectious tale of getting picked up in a nightclub, "Move Any Mountain" (co-penned with Blur's Alex James) the sound of rich trip-hop noir and "Never Let Me Down" the kind of easy, day-dreaming tune Alison Moyet used to knock out in her sleep. In fact there's a worrying nod to the 1980s on more than one occasion, worst offender being the dinky electro pop of "Everything Falls Into Place". This is disposable pop, but enjoyable nonetheless. --Paul Tierney

Bl**dy good debut! So nearly a classic4
I have to say this album still stuns me when I listen to it. And let me say that unlike so many albums I can listen to this one from start to finish. All the songs are at least good, with many being very strong and a couple are classic pop tunes (M.O.T.D. and Take Me Home). SEB has never matched this album, and may never tbh it's that good (2nd album was always going to be playing 2nd fiddle to this one - and it did!).

'Read My Lips' is a finely crafted blend of pop, 80's and dance electro type stuff all mixed up and laid out in well produced and structured songs. Sympathetic drum/sequencer programming allow the songs some space to breath, as too often this style of music suffers from the "there's a semi-quaver pause with no sound in it, so let's fill it!" sentiment. As always less is more. SEB shows a sign of maturity here.

The words are nicely weighted between meaning and candyfloss (like all good pop should be), and SEB sings them all well within the constraints of her uniquely accented vocal range. Nice also that she moved on from the vocal perception of sulkyness often showing in her previous band 'The Audience'.

It's not a total classic album, it's not quite so accomplished as that. But it's a GREAT album and will not age badly as many electonic pop does.

It's still a favourite CD of mine to listen too at home or in the car, and as I mentioned I can easily listen to it all the way through without skipping tracks. But more than any other compliment is that I can't think of a time I have heard a better debut album. It's that good!

Well done SEB.

It's Murder On The Dance Floor!5
Sophie ellis-bextor's first and best album yet all the tracks are fantastic murder on the dance floor is a fun & groovy track sophie's version of take me home is better than cher's and is another upbeat track! lover is very cool & funky i love get over you it's one of the best tracks on the album but ther is on downer to this album and that's groovejet cos it's a live version but it's still good but not as good 1i still give this album an 10/10 if you like this album you must buy her other two albums shoot from the hip 6/10 & trip the light fantastic 8/10 but if you all her solo albums try her album with theaudience but it's very different not as good as her solo albums.

Clever music with a few mainstream songs on here but generally disappointing, lots of 'B' tracks on here.
