Editorial Reviews

CD Description
The songs on the Cranberries' third album touch on painful topics, dealing mainly with loss and the difficulties of growing toward true adulthood. Tragic inspirations include the deaths of singer-lyricist Dolores O'Riordan's grandfather ("Joe") and John Lennon ("I Shot John Lennon"); some import pressings also include "Cordell", an elegy for Denny Cordell, who signed the Cranberries to Island Records in 1991.
Much of this material is bittersweet, but the songs are saved from dreary melancholy by the characteristic quirky Cranberries sound of O'Riordan's angelic voice, scattered with her trademark yelps and other vocal tics, juxtaposed against energetic, hard-edged guitar work by O'Riordan and Noel Hogan. Inaddition to the newly mature lyrics, there is also a new, rougher-edged sound to this album's production, which puts the music within easy reach and lends TO THE FAITHFUL DEPARTEDan earthy appeal.

Customer Reviews

Once more a GREAT album5
As a huge but fairly new cranberries fan, this was one of the last albums of their's that I bought but WOW!

The long intro on Hollywood is just superb and I shot John Lennon is great and the words soon stick in your head!

Once more the Cranberries bring a vibrant set of songs that stay with you for days afterwards.

Only The Faithful5
Why do they release great albums and add to them songs that dont need to be there???
I always think it was great first time round. Anyway i have the original release with the original running order and what i made of it is exemplified in the majesty of songs like Salvation, "to all the kids doing lines, dont do it" sings Dolores with her voice more vibrant and earnest than ever. Its all present here with all her idiosyncracies and tics making her one of my favourite singers.
Hollywood is a powerful opener and they unveil their new sound which is a brave step forward. The band match her all the way with improved playing and confidence as they stride through heavier material.
Forever Yellow Skies is a real standout(possibly my fave cranberry!) as gorgeous Dolores takes it to another level with some execeptional vocal delivery injecting so much passion into this song; "Forever, i'll be forever holding you", she screams.
The Rebels is so sublime and beautiful and you can hear a choir of angels in there as she really layers her voice to great effect. There are almost shades of Seal in her voice here.
I shot John Lennon is another rocker they prove they can really kick it out when they want and the shots ringing out at the end still have the hairs stand on my neck to this day, you never quite know when they're coming!
Electric Blue that follows is almost a eulogy and exudes more angelic hymnal textures and a beautiful guitar solo before a host of reflective songs draws this album out to Bosnia an epic and haunting piece so unique to their repertoire.
I havent heard the add ons and dont care for them as these songs are great on their own as this album is where they really opened out their sound and have not rocked harder since. It really disappoints me all the negative critique this great album gets coz its my fave of theirs and shows you an artist can really move fwd and create something fresh rather than tread the same ol ground for the sake of nostalgics who are stuck in a timewarp. Embrace this and move on dears!

Mediocre3
I could classify myself as a cranberries fan. I own three albums of theirs and also like the rest of their songs. This is certainly not a landmark album. I guess that their best albums are their first two: "Everybody else,...", but especially "No need to argue", which is the one I'd recommend if you had to have only one.

As for this album, apart from the hit singles (Salvation, When You're Gone, Free to Decide ) my personal favourite is "Will You Remember?". The lyrics are quite melancholic and bittersweet. In my opinion this song is the album's best moment.

Cordell is also a nice song, but then again... there are a lot of nice songs out there.

Unless you're a Cranberries fan I wouldn't recommend this.

There are so many masterpieces elsewhere.
