Amazon.co.uk Review
The Rising is Bruce Springsteen's much-anticipated first full-length album with the E Street Band in 18 years. Although it seemed the Boss had put writing rock anthems behind him following Born in the USA, his long-time fans knew if any artist could write anthems addressing September 11, 2001 and not make them sound jingoistic, it would be Bruce Springsteen. The numerous anthems on The Rising are subtler than those of the Born to Run era. But the elements are all there--be it the joyous rocking strains of "Countin' on a Miracle", "Mary's Place" and "Waitin' on a Sunny Day"; the dark overtones of "Further on Up the Road"; or the stunning guitar solo that closes "Worlds Apart", a dramatic Arabic-tinged piece detailing star-crossed love between a Muslim and an "infidel." While most of these songs deal with death and tragedy, they still inspire. But while the lyrics are intriguing, what's more remarkable is how well The Rising works as epic rock & roll as it draws from rockabilly, soul, doo-wop hard rock, country and even industrial. To skewer an old cliche, when The Rising is good, it's great. And even when it's not great, it’s still awfully good. --Bill Holdship

Bruce has risen
It's been said that people can do their best work when faced with adversity. Bruce Springsteen, back with the E street Band for the first time on a proper studio album since - lets face it - Born In The USA, has done just that. From the first listen this cd grabs you and never lets its grip slip. The band are at their tightest ever and the introduction of string sections as well as the Asif Ali Khan Group expand the E street sound and bring an extra dimension to this record.
And it's difficult to pick a favourite. From Barnstorming rockers such as Mary's Place, Lonesome Day and the band's version of My City of Ruins, all with deeper and more meaningful lyrics than the fun, party Cadillac Ranch favourites of old , to the aching, broken-hearted characters on You're Missing and Paradise, Bruce has taken the horrific events at the Twin Towers and has produced songs from every angle. We get the survivor in 'Nothing Man', to the genuine heroes of 'Into The Fire' and 'The Rising', to the people left behind in 'Empty Sky', 'You're Missing' and 'Lonesome Day'. In 'World's Apart' he stops for a few minutes to preach love between cultures.
This is a truly remarkable record, stunningly played and produced. On one hand it is an exhilarating listen and yet, because of the subject matter, you will almost feel guilty for enjoying it so much. The irony of someone making his best record in decades based on such a massive tragedy is difficult at times to come to terms with. But if you like your music inspiring, thought-provoking, and filled with raw emotion go buy 'The Rising'.
Springsteen finds new reasons to sing his song
Bruce has made no secret of the fact that most of the songs here were written in response to the events of 11/9/01. Apparently he felt compelled to write a new album and tour after a fan yelled "We need you!" from a passing car. American needs its working class hero to motivate and uplift people and to reflect on what happened. Several songs deal directly with the aftermath, but hope is always found in some of the most beautiful lyrics and melodies he has written. The starter track, Lonesome Day, sets the scene and is pure classic Springsteen rock. The following song, Into the Fire, is a tribute to the American Fighters and features brilliant country style backing vocals. I disagree with other reviews saying that these songs all could have been written 15 years ago. "Worlds Apart" is very "new age" ethnic sounding with Middle-Eastern style backing vocals, calling for tolerance of other cultures, complete with dance-beat drum loops, which also appear to some extent on "The Fuse". These songs are clearly a radical departure for Springsteen, sound very modern and sound more akin to artists like The Dave Mathews Band, and brings Springsteen into the 21st Century. The most moving song for me is "Your Missing", which is blessed with a stunning melody. The only total throwback to the bar-band, Jersey shore style music is "Mary's Place" which would not sound out of place on "The River" or even "Born in the USA". A tremondous effort, Springsteen's music, essentially about picking yourself up after a fall, never giving up and choosing the right paths has never been more relevant than it is today. A moving, must buy album for fans and newcomers alike.
Bruce & the E street band back with a bang!
this is the first E street band album since "Born in the USA" and it's certainly been worth the wait!
from the opening few bars the quality production of the album is plain to hear (Bruce has teamed up with Brendan O'Brien - of Pearl Jam (& others) fame - and he has made a big difference to the "sound").
there are no weaknesses to this album - 15 tracks / 74 minutes of fantastic music. the band sound better than ever and there are various guest musicians / vocalists who each add to the variety of songs that make the whole.
outstanding points include the opener "lonesome day","waitin' on a sunny day" and "countin' on a miracle" which carry the album along at a fair pace.
"worlds apart" with asif ali khan & group providing accompanying vocals to create a superb song.
"further on up the road" a solid e street rocker and " mary's place" which is a concert preaching song for the new tour!
"you're missing" is a real heart wrenching song coming directly from the september 11th tragedy and the albums title song "the rising" is without doubt one of bruce's best ever tracks - just awesome!
make sure you buy this album - it's the most complete springsteen album to date and worth a place in anyone's collection.
