Product Description

Think of Angie Martinez as the hip-hop Laura Cantrell, an influential DJ so deeply entrenched in her chosen scene that she decided to jump to the other side of the fence, becominga highly regarded recording artist. When the host of New York's Hot 97 debuted in 2001 with UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL, it was plain that she had something of her own to offer to the hip-hop world. Like its predecessor, ANIMAL HOUSE features a bevy of Martinez's famous friends, but her own voice and style are front and centre throughout. Martinez's no-nonsense rhyming is ably supported by constantly surprising and inventive production, as on the emphasis track "If I Could Go", which mixes a Latin-inflected guitar line with synths that resemble nothing so much as the Microsoft e-mail alert tones. Fat Joe, Kelis, and others add their personal touches to the album, but it's Martinez who shines the brightest here.

Customer Reviews

WOW5
I simply love Angie Martinez, she's got so much flava and she can definitely work it.
I was well impressed with her debut UP CLOSE & PERSONAL and ANIMAL HOUSE certainly doesn't disappoint, her albums are the type that you can put on and let play.
My favourite song off ANIMAL HOUSE has to be F'ked up Situation, it's just fantastic the way she keeps her cool on the track whilst deep down inside she's hurting about a failed relationship but in true ANGIE style. I also love the last track very melodic and a great finish to the album, I'm not to sure about the interludes in-fact they crack me up on anybody's album, but she definitely makes up for the very few interludes there are with some tight songs.
I recently went through a break-up but I found this album a real comfort in a way that I didn't sit and cry all the time, I got on with life and I knew that Angie had my back.
I wish there was more female rappers like her, the Latin cross over is great, y'all remember LIVE AT JIMMY's? How fly was that track?

YO ANGIE!5
Angie Martinez returns to the rap world with 'Animal House' and shows that she has a talent to rival the more commercially successful likes of Missy Elliott and Lil' Kim.
Single 'If I Could Go' is a strong track, featuring Soccario and the sublime Lil' Mo, with an anthemic chorus. 'Never' (which features a strange squeaky female voice!) sees Angie sing by herself, and is a powerful song.
'Take You Home' (feat. Kelis) is a sexy song with both the girls in ultra-flirt mode, Kelis providing the mesmerising chorus, and Angie being a bit more graphic (but not smutty) in her description of things.
Track number ten, '****** Up Situation', isn't perhaps the hardcore rap song that you would expect from it's title, but is more suited to a breezy summer day, kinda like something Ja Rule and Ashanti would do, but with a bit more bite to it.
The album is let-down a bit by one too many interludes which ruin the flow of some of the tracks sometimes, but Angie's sheer stlye averts that from being disastrous.
There is not one really weak track on this album, and the talented Angie Martinez sets the pace for the other female rappers out there, despite being not as well known. Fans of rap out there should check this woman out, as 'Animal House' is a work of brilliance. Missy Elliott has set the benchmark for the female rappers out there, and Angie has risen above it. Angie is the way to go.
