Synopsis
The World Wrestling Federation's annual Backlash competition is one of the biggest professions wrestling events of the year. The top contenders of the season get in the ring, all set to slam each other's bodies against the ropes and use whatever props they can get their massive hands on. 2002's event featured nine superstar matches, including a historic battle between Triple H and Hollywood Hogan.

Good, but no title shot....4
WWE Backlash 2002 is a good PPV. There are a few problems. First, the Austin/Undertaker match is pretty slow, but most annoying is the sound. You see, when it came for this DVD to be released, Undertaker had stopped using "Rollin'". This resulted in his music bieng dubbed with a different track (You can confirm this by looking at Flair's aftermatch inteview, where his music on the replay is "Rollin'"). This results in a delay, with the soundtrack about 2 seconds behind for the rest of the DVD, meaning you see things way before you hear them. I tried not to let this spoil my enjoyment of it, but it gets very ammoying very quickly. Highlight: Voodo Child!! Hulk vs HHH is amazing.

Backlash brings list of stars, but struggles to back it up3
WWE Backlash on DVD offers the usual array of extras expected from DVD releases involving wrestling. As a Pay Per View event, these always include the biggest and most famous stars of the wrestling company. This one is the same, providing Hulk Hogan, Triple H, Stone Cold Steve Austin and Undertaker, to name but a few. However, it is my opinion that this PPV lacked the level of intensity seen in other WWF/WWE events of the past. A spectacle yes, but not of the same calibre as Wrestlemania 17 or X-8, or the Summerslam series'. There is also a distinct lack of variety in the match styles (no true hardcore, ladder or cage varieties).

The extras include the usual mish-mash of interviews and short trailers and features included in the build-up to the event itself. The inclusion of the match from Heat involving the Big Show is a welcome surprise addition.

Overall, not the classic that the bill would make you believe, but a satisfactorily entertaining event. Worth buying for most wrestling fans, if not... not really a great introductory piece.

a fine event 3
Flip,i thought it was just my dvd that was ahead with the sound, but another reviewer has stated that this is indeed the case,it means that we hear the slam before we see it,it is annoying but i will review the event without the dvd quality coming into play as best i can.
The event opened with the WWF cruiserweight title being up for grabs, the champion billy kidman went up against tajiri. This match was excellent,it was lively,it had some manic moves and was a real battle in many ways, the perfect way to kick off an event.
Scott hall fought bradshaw next and the match was described as ugly by the commentary team and i cant top that so it was ugly,it was a brawl and a bit if a let down but it was what it was and not much was expected from it.
The womans title was up next as the champion jazz went up against trish stratus, this match featured some innovative and good quality female wrestling so it was a triumph in many ways ,a rare compliment there from yours truly.
Brock lesnar made his pay per view debut next in a year he wouldnt forget ,he went up against jeff hardy in a squash match,i have to be honest in saying that. The match has a sadistic streak to it and is watchable but dont be expecting a varied contest,it is very much a one sided feast of aggression.
Edge fought kurt angle next in what was a brilliant match, two very talented athletes sharing the all important factor of chemistry,i thought this was excellent.
The intercontiental title was up for grabs next as the champ, rob van dam went up against eddie guererro. This match wasnt as good as it should have been, the problem lay at the feet of the pace of the match,it was too slow, alot of slow, wearing down moves when the match was crying out for fire and pace which both men would have been more suited too,it wasnt a disaster but let down by the use of both men.
The undertaker fought stonecold steve austin for the right to be the number one contender for the WWF title, ric flair was the guest ref and that led to controversy from the start but it kept things interesting. This match lasted well over 20 minutes and was seldom dull as the contest ebbed and flowed in various ways, domination changing hands and then back again, the usual kind of stuff but with an added greatness.
The WWF tag team championship looked out of place sandwiched between the two big matches and it looked even worse when you watch it as the champs chuck and billy went up against maven and al snow, seldom has a crowd cared less about a match, even caring less is too much, this was off the radar in terms of how terrible it is,the word for it hasnt been invented.
The main event was up next and was hyped so much that i dare say there wasnt a man in the world that didnt know about it as the WWF champion triple h went up against hollywood hulk hogan or HHH.This was a great match, one of hogans best in years,he really took to the opportunity at hand and triple h allowed him to dictate and look good while never looking like a whippet himself, there was plenty to admire here on a memorable main event,a solid purchase at 3.5 stars out of 5.
