Synopsis
Recorded in Paris at the Grande Hall de la Villette, this is the video counterpart to Manu's recently released "Manu Chao and the Radio Bemba Sound System - The Live Album." Drawing on material that spans his entire career, this electrifying performance is complemented by no less than four documentaries.

Frantic
If you have anly heard Manu Chao's two studio albums, this will be a bit of a surprise: whereas the albums are reasonably calm and respectable, this is sweaty, noisy, and exciting - very much like his old band, Mano Negra, were in concert.
Back in the 80's Mano Negra were described by some as the French Clash.. If hat is the case then Chao's solo albums have been like Joe Strummer's.
The documentaries on this disc are a bit mixed. The best is probably the one about the anti-globalisation event. But you don't buy this for the documentaries: you buy it for the sheer energy of the live show. I saw Chao a few years ago at the Brixton Acadamy and this disc is a very faithful representation of the show.
Just keep an eye out for the blistering acoustic guitar work towards the end, played on an instrument that looks like it has been in a fight, attached to the guitarist with a bit of old string.

5 STARS FOR CONTENT
This DVD has so many layers to it, it is possible to miss some stuff the first time around.
The show is great but short. The primary documentary is superb.
The short documentaries are vital especially the footage in Genova 2001 at the immigrants rights march that took place before the main anti-G8 protests. Manu did a gig for the kids and paid for the supply of bottles of water and fruit for the protesters many who slept in parks during the Battle of Genoa. They don't mention this but I knew it anyway. I could have done without the bit in rural Chile where some peasants kill a Lama in a rather harsh way. But I guess that the global landscape in the Manu Chao universe is a warts'n'all one. Plus there is a cultural gap there between even European Latins and non-Latin Europeans when it comes to animals. Anglo-Saxons suffer from other kinds of insensitivities.
There is an ARTE, MANU CHAO documentary shot in South America (no animal slaughtered in that one) that needs releasing on DVD bring it on!!!

bloody fantastic!
i ordered a copy of this from the 'used and new' section because i just couldn't wait for it to eventually become available (amazon - get more copies please!) it took about two days to be delivered, and i can truthfully say I LOVE IT! The guys are so good live, and even though i wasn't there i felt as if they were playing live in my living room. just pure energy. i also love the documentaries, although admittedly i have to fast forward through the llama killing bit... but to get an insight into what this band is like, and just how damned creative they are (see the dinner table jam session! bottles as drums haha) is so enjoyable. i've been a fan of manu for a few years, and with songs like these i will remain so for many more... just trust the reviews and buy it! you won't be dissapointed!
