The Rightful Queen Of World Music
Okay, that's a subjective opinion, and I'll probably change and name somebody else as queen of world music someday...I'm fickle that way.
And I can't believe I'm the first one to review this. The lady deserves a lot more notice than that.
Cesaria Evora is one of the most distinguished and worthy singers of world music around. She centers often on the Cape Verdean sound, but there is much of Brazil and of Portugal roots here. The variety represented here actually represents her as international in scope.
I don't always recommend "Best Of" albums highly, but this is truly a terrific introduction to a woman who not only masters each style she sings, but obviously is loving every moment of it, and her enthusiasm for what she's singing is contagious.
You don't get the lyrics in the program notes of a "Best Of" album, and I personally don't believe understanding the lyrics is that important to the enjoyment of the lady's singing.
Most highly recommended.
Sublime
I agree with the previous reviewer both that this is an excellent introduction to the wonderful music of Cesaria and that this is a singer that doesn't get nearly enough respect or attention in the UK.
Her glorious voice is really something else (apparently developed by the copious smoking of cigars!). The music turns from joy to lament, but the passion underneath all of the songs is unmistakable and infectious.
Her sound is clearly influenced by the Portuguese Sodade sytle but you can clearly discern the African influences too which are rolled into a sublime mix on this album. She is also very lucky in her backing vocals and her band, all of whom are excellent vocalists/instrumentalists in their own rights.
This particular album is worth buying for the first song "Sodade", which is a truly wonderful anthem, but this is an album with something for everyone. Your CD collection will not really be complete without at least one album of Cesaria's.
Queen of Island Cool
Not a household name, but she should be. Cesaria Evora sings bluesy torch songs the from Cape Verde Islands in the tropical east Atlantic, with night club soul and a whiff of African musicality. If you liked Buena Vista Social Club and want something fresh for chilled summer listening, buy this.
