revelatory second album
Red Animal War's first album for Deep Elm, "Breaking In An Angel" was a very good first album, containing a few outstanding moments in an otherwise solid emo-rock outing. However, on the much darker, more startling "Black Phantom Crusades" the quality of the material, the production, the sequencing is considerably increased..."Still" is a breathtaking, crescendo-filled opener with stark lyrical imagery, "Straight Lines For Construction Workers" starts off with just guitar and voice before exploding in a burst of saxophones and then dying down to an almost torch-song melancholy.
"When I Get The Feelin' (Back In My Hands)," the awesome "Mouse" and the frankly stunning "Jambalaya" are the best examples of Red Animal War's primal rhythmic attack mixed with striking vocals and lyrics. Most noticeable though is the phenomenal bass playing courtesy of Brian Pho. The only minor fault is the inclusion of the more straightforward punk of "Gattaca" which temporarily breaks the mood of the album. However, this is only a small blip in an otherwise brilliantly sequenced record.
anyone with even a minor interest in the Deep Elm label and so-called "emo" music (which I don't think is a very good way of describing this record, since it covers many bases musically) should buy this album and play it with the volume all the way up...anyone who's a fan of Red Animal War's first album should buy this and revel in the leap in quality.
