Part breakbeat sorcerer, part imaginary soundtrack composer and part jazz scientist, Amon Tobin has expanded on this latest LP, Out of Nowhere, his ability to create universes full of infinite sonic possibilities and thrill-seeking surprises. The key to listening, as with all of Tobin's work, is to try and expect the unexpected. One minute this album is lifting your soul with insouciant clouds of elf-dust; the next it's violently firing sharp darts of menacing brutalism at your head. Tobin's attention to detail shines through as he weaves finely clipped vocals and swirling soundtracks with beats so stuttering and sharp you could cut your ears on them. Overall this is yet another stunning combination of artistic reverie and breakbeat-fuelled revelry from one of the UK's most erudite post-drum 'n' bass producers. --Paul Sullivan

A beautiful beach with shark infested waters...
It's a completely unprecedented work of genius. No question. The same goes for the rest of his stuff. Even his stuff as Cujo, you have never heard the likes of Amon Tobin before.

I'm not going to go into too much detail with regard to the tracks on the album. What i will say is that this is an album for people who love music as a whole and want to try new things. A particularly dark record in essence, it does have its lighter sides. In places.

If you are bored with the samey electronica of the Chemical Toilet Brothers and such and you want something new, then this is the man for you.

Expect the unexpected. Amon's music takes you places that you have never been before. The lack of innovation in the music industry right now is shocking. Thank the musical gods, then, for record labels like Ninja, Mo-Wax, Fat Cat and Warp, where the ethos is on the music and artist development, not making a quick buck.

Guitar licks, saxophone, heavy bass, scattered jungle, distorted lyrics, trumpet, washboard, kitchen sink, you name it. Its all here. And its been mixed in a way that I never thought possible. Genius.

The beauty of his music is its originality. Its impossible to predict where on earth he's going to go next, if indeed he stays on earth. Im not sure even he knows. The amount of innovation he displays on each record is simply staggering. Check out "Rosies" on this album and you will see what i mean.

This is more of a review of the artist than this particular album, and different albums will appeal to different people. Out from Out Where is the darkest of them all, but Superemodified appeals to me the most. Its like he's directing a bizzare unsettling film in his head and its coming out as this strange noise, a bit like music. You can cut the atmosphere with a knife.

Pure unbridled creativity, Amon takes you on a journey that you have never been on and will be one you will never forget. Its lovely and chilled one minute, then downright scary the next. The variety on offer is extremely vast. You can never get bored of his music and it will keep you coming back for more. Where will he go next? When are we going to get samples of his bowl movements? When is he going to score a film?

All you disillusioned pop fans take comfort, our saviour has arrived.

Slick moody soundtracky music
First step with this album is to ignore ALL references you may have ever heard to 'post-drum and bass' guff that you have heard this labelled as. Its yet ANOTHER needless pigeonhole, fast breakbeast don't necessarily equate to drum and bass. Amon has more to do with fast jazz, hip hop and soundtracky orchestral arrangements than drum and bass.

Amon recently has been signed up to provide the soundtrack to the next spy thriller game in the Splinter Cell series, no doubt this album was slap bang at the top of his CV as far as getting that job goes. It echoes! Deep rumbling sound effects ominously punctuate the album, the entire thing sounding like it is being broadcast from one huge, dark cave. Check the way that Amon weaves in some choice samples from well known classical pieces, the phased orchestral strings in the opener sound like something the Progidy may have kicked out in their Jilted Generation period. A while ago I heard the full piece where the sample came from playing in the back of a TV programme. They're not shamelessly ripped and pasted in, it all sounds like a natural piece of the music.

Back From Space is a great opening track and there are several highlights on this album. Even though a constant mood and blend is woven throughout, El Wraith and Searchers shine above all else in my mind. Perfectly weaving swinging breaks, the orchestral samples and various fx together to great effect. Verbal was plucked to be the single off this album, stick the CD in your PC and you'll get to see Alex Rutherford's video (he of the eye burning and ear drum mashing Gantz Graf video for Autechre).

Its a top album, one to play if you want to turn your walk to work into a spy thriller. Its even made me consider checking out the new Splinter Cell which, so far, has been about as an appealing a game as sandpaper moisturiser. Moody breaks heads should give it a blast.

Another excellent album from Amon Tobin
Amon Tobin continues in a similar vein to the also excellent Supermodified. From the first track, it becomes quite clear that Tobin is a cut above, and the drum programming is out of this world. An excellent album and a must have for any tobin fan.
