Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Underneath all Christine Aguilera's coy affectations and vocal gymnastics lurks a rare talent. With her second album, Aguilera allows it to flower by abandoning all pretence of courting the teenage market. Stripped is a seemingly effortless move into weightier adult territory. Using her extraordinary voice as a much subtler instrument, Aguilera sings movingly about the disintegration of a relationship with grit and anger, ultimately stronger for the pain. But that's not all that's on her agenda: Aguilera also extols the power of women on "Can't Hold Us Down", which features Lil' Kim. Other guests include Dave Navarro, Redman, ?uestlove and Alicia Keys. Aguilera co-wrote most of the songs on the disc, and produced one cut. She also partnered with former 4 Non Blondes leader and Pink collaborator Linda Perry on four songs, which gives her a rock edge she never possessed before. --Jaan Uhelszki

Customer Reviews

This Album Is Not Just Great It's Brilliant. 5
In my opinion, no other artist could have come out with an album like this, because this album pretty much pushed every boundary, and broke every rule, and was such a stark contrast to her debut, to Christina this album was about coming out, and being herself instead of the `fake' & `forced' bubblegum pop star she was on the first album, although there is plenty of darkness on this album, it still speaks true of Christina, and she certainly doesn't hold anything back.

The 1: 39 intro sets the mood & atmosphere for the album, with snippets of news reports and some brief singing, primarily about Christina's transition from bubblegum pop princess to the independent diva, then we go into the independent, female liberation anthem `Can't Hold Us Down' were Christina is accompanied by jailhouse rapper Lil' Kim, then there's `Walk Away', like `Fighter' a vocally and lyrically very powerful, but also expresses a darker side, after that there's the spoken Spanish language interlude, and the very Latin `Infatuation', next there's another interlude which sounds very Mariah Carey, like something from the `Rainbow' album, just like the track that follows which is one of my favourites `Loving Me 4 Me', very soft and smooth R&B feel to it, the slightly bluesy `Impossible' written by Alicia keys, again other one of the highlights from the album, then there's `Underappreciated' really good song and nice hooks, but pretty much follows on from the style of `Impossible', then there's the world class smash hit `Beautiful', the most important thing about this song was not the amazing vocals, or the great hooks, but the message, it has a universal message that everyone could relate to no matter who they were, then there's the laid back rock styled `Make Over', i could never really relate to this song like i could the rest of the album, don't really know why, the next song is `Cruz', without a doubt one of my solid favourites from the album about leaving home, incredible song, fabulous lyrics, `Soar' this song being another one of my favourites, it has a very gospel vibe to it and really powerful vocals, `Get Mine You Get Yours' this song is quite flirty and a bit of a stark contrast to the last song `Soar', but its a great song, great hooks, defiantly a favourite, next comes the super raunchy club banger `Dirrty', all i can say about this is nothings ever over the top - brilliant, then we have yet another interlude and `The Voice Within', another highlight, some fabulous balladry from Christina, as usual powerful vocals and a strong message, `I'm Ok' extremely emotional song about Christina's violent farther, this song is no frills and is one of the most honest songs i've ever heard in my life, the album finalizes itself with the gospel tinged `Keep On Singin' My Song', yet another favourite, i mean how long did she hold that note for! amazing song and closes the album perfectly.

There's not really anything missing on this album, it's honest and down to earth, a lot like Christina herself, this album caused much controversy and stunned critics and fans alike, but is a record that is a trailblazer in 21st century music, Christina poured her heart and soul into this, co-writing most of the songs herself, and the end result is a timeless masterpiece we'll all still enjoy for years to come.
