Although young Jason Mraz's percussive acoustic guitar rhythms, tumbling verbiage, and funk/folk/jazz/pop concoctions may occasionally bear echoes of John Mayer and Dave Matthews, that's only one part of a bigger musical story as realised on the singer-songwriter's debut album WAITING FOR MY ROCKETTO COME. "Absolutely Zero", for instance, is a sophisticated, atmospheric ballad that bears echoes of Jeff Buckley and Coldplay. With its sunny horns, wah-wah guitar, and bouncy groove, "No Stopping Us" sounds like a lost '70s AM pop classic. "I'll Do Anything" alternates a rock chorus with a percolating reggae feel on the verses. And while the aforementioned Mayer and Matthews are admittedly predisposed toward a somewhat mumbling vocal style, Mraz sports a strong, bright voice loaded with both range and personality, making it that much easier for him to glide from style to style throughout the album.

Amazing Mr. A-Z!
Jason Mraz has rapidly become one of my favourite artists. Every song on this album is great, and yes, there is a difference between Mraz live and what you hear on 'Waiting for my Rocket'. It does have a produced sound, but this wasn't a problem for me. I discovered this sound first and loved it and so went in search of more Mraz to add to my collection. My favourite album is 'Live at Java Joe's', which really showcases Mraz's talents (as well as Toca's!!). 'Tonight, Not Again' is also worth a look, but if you don't like screaming from fans then you may want to give it a miss.
'Waiting for my Rocket' lets Mraz's personality show through but in a more discreet, mainstream version than the other albums. It's a great album filled with upbeat songs as well as slow, melodious tunes. My favourites are Absolutley Zero, Sleep All Day and Who Needs Shelter, but there really isn't a weak song on the album. If you're new to Mraz, try this album first, then his latest effort (Mr. A-Z) afterwards - you won't be disappointed!
Not quite the remedy...
"Waiting For My Rocket To Come" is a huge dissapointment.
Having been a fan of Jason Mraz for a few years now, I was pleased to discover that he would be releasing a studio album. However, following it's release, I was less than blown away.
I first found Jason through a copy of "Live at Java Joe's", a live album that was sold through his website, and was blown away by the beauty of his songs, played on an acoustic with percussion accompaniment provided by Toca Rivera (the man with his finger in too many pies). When I played "Waiting For My Rocket To Come", the beauty of the live tracks was gone, and a cheesy country air had taken its place on some tracks, run of the mill american teen rock on the rest.
What I noticed immediately when playing "Waiting For My Rocket To Come" was that the strongest and most original tracks from "Live at Java Joe's" where nowhere to be seen. "Did I fool ya?", "The dream-life of Rand McNally" (the bridge of which went on to form the much less powerful "The Rememdy") and "Common Pleasure", the highlights of the live set and what I previously believed to be Jason's strongest moments are gone, and I assume I'll never hear studio versions.
Gone too was the incredible grasp of skat singing which made Jason so individual and unusual in my opinion. This was most apparent on "Did I fool ya?" and "Common Pleasure", and made listening to "Live at Joe's" so exciting.
I *like* "Waiting For My Rocket To Come", but it doesn't blow me away. I recommend that if you like this album, you should buy "Live at Java Joe's", and you'll be in love, but if you're a fan of that album, you might want to steer clear of this.
So good you'll wear out the CD in days!
Just very, very good.
Good tunes, great lyrics, amazing voice... If music really makes you happy, this will be the best £10 you ever spend.
