Confused Angel?4
Once known as the country singer from the US with the stonking voice, Leann decided a couple of years ago that she wanted a break from Country music and this album called Twisted Angel is the result of that break. Leann moves into pop territory with surprising ease thanks to a large number of top producers and writers. The sound of country is a ghost on this set with only Love is an army as a gentle reminder of her musical roots. The opening track Life goes on, is a real feelgood song with a cracking uptempo feel and good production. Ballards get a look in on this album, with The Safest Place being one of the better examples. She even manages to get a little saucy on Tic Toc. Review My Kisses is a rather slinky ballard which is perfect for late nights, the other big ballard on the album is You Made Me Find Myself, written by Tina Arena, however the original version on Tina's album is much better as this one tends to be rather OTT. Wound up is an example of the move into urban pop and it isn't bad. On the whole this is a reasonable attempt at finding a new audience, it's a shame however that many of the songs have to be sung very loudly using more notes than is probably needed, on some songs this works whilst on others this clearly doesnt. However this album manages to fit into a number of catagories fairly successfully, having plenty for pop fans to listen to and plenty for Adult Contemporary pop fans to enjoy too and who knows? In a couple of years from now she may be giving Celine Dion a run for her money.

Her best album yet...4
After purchasing Leann Rimes' last album "I Need You", I must say I was a little disappointed by the variety offered - it was just too ballad-heavy for my liking. And what's more, they all seem to merge into one, with no great melodies or memorable lyrics to distinguish one from the next. Thankfully, this is a problem which is not repeated on this new album, "Twisted Angel".

Opening with recent single "Life Goes On" - a mid-paced guitar driven pop song with a very Max Martin-esque (late producer of Britney Spears' and Backstreet Boys' early material) melody - the album switches between styles with ease. "Wound Up" is one of the catchiest tracks on the album - the tag of "Urban Pop" is one that I don't fully understand, but in my own words, the vocals are slightly more raw and melody really drives home the powerful lyrics.

Track 3 is without a doubt the highlight for me - "The Safest Place" is an absolutely gorgeous ballad, heartfelt lyrics and very powerful and memorable melody are delivered in such a natural way, you really feel like Leann is singing from personal experience.

"Trouble With Goodbye" seems to have severe self-image issues - it seems to be torn between being an R'n'B jam, or a modern country tune. Not as instantly endearing as previous tracks, but I have the feeling it's a grower! "Damn" is classic Leann a la "How Do I Live" - 'nuff said! "Suddenly" is a great anthem - it has the most striking lyric on the album in my opinion: "Suddenly you find yourself alone, and suddenly you find yourself..."

"Tic Toc" is definately a slick R'n'B groove, with a pulsing bass and sassy vocals. "Sign Of Life" - well, it's not bad, but it just kinda washes over me when I'm listening to the album. "Review My Kisses" is epic ballad central!! Takes a bit of getting used to with all the (over)dramatic orchestration, but there is a sensual tune in there somewhere!

I love "No Way Out", it has a kind of angry feel to it, this would be great to belt out if you've had a bad day! "Love Is An Army" and "You Made Me Find Myself", again they're ok but nothing extra-special. And the grand finale, the title track is...a bit of a let-down. It's a kind of modern country, driving, crunchy blues ballad (bizarre I know, but it's the best description I can muster!), and it just seems out of place on this album.

All in all, "Twisted Angel" shows Leann Rimes experimenting a little, and in many cases she pulls it off with style, feeling and high professionalism. Only occasionally does she lose her way and slip into old habits of middle-of-the-road ballads - great promise for the future!

RIMES ROCKS!!5
Until I heard 'Life Goes On', I didn't really care too much for LeAnn Rimes. I loved the single, and decided on the off-chance to go with the album - and I wasn't disappointed, as it ranks up there with my favourites - and they're all r'n'b.
So, Twisted Angel marks LeAnn's transaction from the country side of things to a more pop/rock orientated genre of music, with a little r'n'b sprinkled in there. Opening track 'Life Goes On' is a feel-good tune, and this is quickly followed by 'Wound Up', one of the best songs on the album. The song is about a troubled songstress, much like 'Lucky' by Britney Spears. However, 'Wound Up' has a much darker feel to it, and the backing music is mean 'n' moody.
'The Safest Place' is an all-and-out ballad, and I don't really care too much for it at all, but fans of the old LeAnn will probably adore it. 'Trouble With Goodbye' is pop tinged with r'n'b, where LeAnn is having a hard time saying goodbye to her love. The chorus (saying goodbye in different languages) isn't that inspired, but is quie catchy.
Fifth tune 'Damn' is quite mediocre. 'Suddenly', if released, would become a pop-rock anthem. It's got that kind of vibe to it, and sounds very Avril Lavigne-esque, but only a bit less rocky. 'Tic-Toc' is LeAnn's journey into raunchville, and it is absolutely amazing, a brilliant track. It's definitely the most r'n'b of anything on the album. 'Sign Of Life' is less up-tempo than most of the songs, but not a ballad. It's a slow-burner, and again on of the best on the album.
Track 9 (Review My Kisses), Track 11 (Love Is An Army), and Track 12 (You Made Me Find Myself) are all ballads again, and rather bland when compared with the up-tempo songs on the rest of the album. But if you're into ballads in a big way, you'll love these.
Then there is track 10(No Way Out) and the final track, 'Twisted Angel'. 'No Way Out' ranks among the best on the album, and here LeAnn is saying how she cannot escape and is being held back by something. It is the darkest track on the album. 'Twisted Angel' is a terrific song, and kind of feel-good whilst being fairly slow. LeAnn's voice is suited well to the long notes here.
Overall, 'Twisted Angel' is a perfect pop/rock album, ballads mixed with dark, moody songs and those dabbling in r'n'b. LeAnn shows why, at only nineteen, why she's stuck around for so long, and she'll be here for many more years to come. If she keeps making material like this.
