Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Beverley Knight's third album, Who I Am, shows how far the "girl from Wolverhampton" has come from her admittedly brilliant debut, B Funk. Knight, whose bright, up-tempo R&B songs have crossed age and genre barriers, is clearly making the most of being Britain's most popular soul-singer since Sade.

Knight has surrounded herself with some impressive producers and with guests such as Musiq Soulchild, who flexes his Stevie Wonder like voice on the lovely ballad "Beautiful Contradiction". Produced by James Poyser and Che Guevara, who between them have worked with Lauryn Hill, D'Angelo and Jill Scott, Beverley revels in impressing us with her gospel-great voice and her tight songwriting.

The reggae-tinged "Get Up" and the funky "Shoulda Woulda Coulda" showcase Beverley's command of the dance floor and bear witness to her stunning range (vocally, emotionally and texturally). The playful and sexy challenge of "The Shape of You", the multifarious sounds of "Same (As I Ever Was)" and the Prince-esque "Ambition (It All Comes 2 U)" demonstrate her undeniable hip-hop sensibility as well.

As the push-me-pull-you tension of her second album, Prodigal Sista, gives way to a much more upbeat direction, Knight is obviously more comfortable with herself. Who I Am quickly proves that Knight, unlike many of today's studio-enhanced artists, is the real deal. --Reuben Dessay

Customer Reviews

Pure Gold5
I own all of Beverley's albums, and whilst looking to buy a copy of this for a friend, I am shocked to see that nobody has been moved to write a review about it.

Beverley Knight is a hugely underrated British artist who is truly unique. Who I Am is one of those rare albums, which doesn't have a single track on it that makes you reach for the 'skip' button on your CD player. It's a blend of soulful and more up-tempo R&B tracks, all of which seem to have lyrics with real meaning behind them. It’s so refreshing to hear an artist that writes their own tracks, and has clearly given each song so much thought.

Although this album is wonderful as a whole, some of my favourite tracks include Shoulda Woulda Coulda, the most successful release in terms of chart position, Whatever’s Clever, Shape of You, and Gold, which is guaranteed to make anyone feel good about themselves.

Who I Am is an excellent introduction to Beverley, though if you like this, you should definitely check out her previous two albums, Prodigal Sista and The B Funk.

If you appreciate U.K talent, enjoy soul and R&B, or simply want to hear something a bit different from the average, I strongly recommend you buy this. Words can't really do it justice.

The future of British soul/ r&b5
Out of her three albums this is probably her most diverse and definately the best album so far. Her amazing voice stands out from the start. The highlights for me are "Shoulda woulda coulda", "Shape of you", "Beautiful contradiction", "Whatever's clever" and "Gold". Beverley definately paves the way for future female soul / r&b artists. Hopefully we won't have to wait as long for her next offering.

Really Fantastic5
This album is amazing BK has a wonderful voice, every song on this album is good none of them are weak. She has done her best work on this album. If you want to listen to an album that is easy listening, you just want to hear someone who can actually sing then this is for you it has everything.
