Product Description

The Red Hot Chili Peppers' 1984 self-titled debut may not have been as stellar as future releases would be (UPLIFT MOFOPARTY PLAN, MOTHER'S MILK, etc.), but the band's intoxicating punk-funk proved to be a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stagnant rock scene. Original members Hillel Slovak (guitar) and Jack Irons (drums) bowed out just prior to the recording of the debut (they'd return for the next release, 1985's FREAKY STYLEY), as fill-ins Jack Sherman and Cliff Martinez joined singer Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea. The album-opening "True Men Don't Kill Coyotes" was the band's first video to appear on MTV, while "Get Up and Jump" has proven tobe a perennial concert staple. Other highlights include "Green Heaven", "Out in L.A"., and "Police Helicopter".

Customer Reviews

Just Not That Good, To Be Honest...1
I'm a big Chili fan, but this CD remains probably their worst ever. You can't deny the funk, the energy, and Flea's uncut bass, but all of this is of little consequence when the whole CD sounds as if it's been recorded through a trash can. The recording is really, really terrible.

Some of the songs don't help either. 'Baby Appeal', 'You Always Sing The Same', and 'Mommy Where's Daddy' are all very very bad. In fact, if for some reason the Chilis gave up after this record, then no-one, absolutely no-one would've heard it. Much of this can be put down to inexperience, and we're all happy they survived through it.

It's not all bad. Flea's bass at least, gets the spotlight it deserves. 'Out in L.A.' is decent, as is 'Get Up And Jump'. However, this CD is for completists only, and the Uplift Mofo Party Plan is a better early day option.

CG-Red Hot Chili Peppers Album Review2
Im afraid this is the worst Chili Peppers album and would agree that the prescence of Hillel Slovak and Jackie Irons would have turned it round. It starts well with True Men Dont Kill Coyotes and looks vaguely promising.
The second song almost made my heart internally bleed. As a big chili peppers fan I was shocked that Baby Appeal was even recorded it is the worst song I have ever heard, ever.Buckle Down isnt bad,Green Heaven could be a classic on another record.Get up and Jumps ok but beware of Out in La.The original demo on this record is way better.THis is slightly dissappointing for thier first record.

Warning to other potential buyers2
I have rated this album as 2 stars, as I am sure it is quite a good album, however I have been unable to actually listen to it, as the copy protection on the disc means it will not play on my cd player, computer or mp3 player. Obviously this is not the case with everyone, as other reviewers have not mentioned this, but I feel I should mention this as a warning for others, as I did not realise this when I bought it, and had i realised I would not have bought it
