Amazon.co.uk Review
It's hard to say what adds more ballast to singer Kelly Rowland's solo debut, Simply Deep--her chart-topping past with Destiny's Child or her insanely sexy duet (and accompanying video) with hip-hop star Nelly on the song "Dilemma". For certain, Rowland will take her place alongside fellow Destiny's Child member Beyonce Knowles as a hip, self-assured R&B force with a terrifically elastic voice, if not groundbreaking material.
A slick, mostly upbeat clutch of smoochy urban ballads and he-done-me-wrong laments, Simply Deep sounds expensive and Cristal-soaked, which was doubtless the goal. And there are notable exceptions--"Love/Hate" is a electronically juiced rump-shaker while the poignant album opener, "Stole", stands as a beacon to the underdog, delivered in a voice as striking as the face it belongs to, which is saying something. --Kim Hughes
CD Description
This is the debut album from Kelly Rowland, one third of the chart topping R&B outfit, Destiny's Child. 'Simply Deep' mixes soulful R&B, hip hop styled beats, and Kelly's unique vocals helping create her own identity away from the success of Destiny's Child. The album features guest appearances from Nelly, and Joe Budden and also includes the number one single 'Dilemma'.

Getting Her Own Limelight
Her debut solo album shows us the real Kelly after her being some what shadowed in Destiny's Child. Her vocals are smooth yet strong and powerful with a good range. The album features Dilemna which was her first single since Destiny's Child featurring Nelly. This was a mainstream rap/pop tune but the rest of the album tracks don't tend to be like that. They are more soulful and there tends to be more ballads than pop songs or more edgy different sounds.
Her first solo single is Stole. This a meaningful and soulful ballad telling a story of young people's lives being stolen in different ways. Kelly's vocals are strong and moving and this was a perfect debut track.
Can't Nobody is the next track to be released. It is very edgy and I really love it. It has a very strong bass line and is a fun livley song and I thought quite different.
I also really liked Simply Deep which was a beautiful song written by Beyonce's younger sister Solange who also sings with Kelly on this track.
Haven't Told You is another personal favourite. Kelly's vocals are smooth and like silk on this ballad like track, with not a very strong bass line but more acoustic guitars etc
I have to say I didn't really like the tracks Obsession or Love/Hate . Obsession was very 'fake' sounding as synthesisers played a big part in the dischordant melody. The same goes to say for Love/Hate which sounds rather digital and something that Brandy would have.
Overall I am really pleased with this album and think it is a r'n'b classic. You should all buy it as Kelly is going to be huge with these unique and beautiful songs on which her vocal talent shines
Go for it Kelly !
I prefer Kelly to her somewhat rival Beyonce. Her music just sounds better, and I feel she doesn't get enough singing time in Destiny's Child. Yes she will have more hits with DC but as Beyonce has more or less taken over DC, Kelly and Michelle have more or less been pushed aside. In this album we get to see what Kelly is really like, and I think she is possibly one of the best R&B singers around... songs like Stole and Haven't I Told You are the real highlights of the album, but most of the songs are pretty good. You will not be disapointed you bought this album.
ROLL ON ROWLAND!
Beyonce Knowles, move over! You're great 'n' all, but I think that Kelly is here to steal your crown as supreme solo artist out of the trio, and she does it with style - bags of it!
Destiny's Child being my fave band, I'm bound to be biased towards Kelly and show affection to her. In a way, I am. But in a way, I'm surprised with just how good this girl is! Drowned out by Beyonce usually, I never suspected that this girl has such an amazing voice! So, now to the songs...
The title track is, in my opinion, rather disappointing. It might be a slow burner, but the wax hasn't even begun to melt on my proverbial musical candle. And the more I hear it, the more I get sick of 'Dilemma'! Can't radios stop playing it? But current single 'Stole' is in a league of its own. Absolutely fantastic. Sure, the lyrics may be dodgy in places, but what they hey! It's a fantastic ballad, and showcases the talents that this young lady has kept shrouded in mystery all these years.
Next single 'Can't Nobody' is pure r'n'b. You can just imagine this coming on in a club, and everyone'll be on their feet. It's that kinda song. But it's only one of three up-tempo songs on the whole album. The other, 'Past 12', is in my opinion, the best on the whole album. Disco fused together with r'n'b, this is a fun song made for singing along to - it's got a chorus that infects every part of your brain, and you'll find yourself singing to it for no reason! 'Love/Hate' was co-written by the newly married Brandy Norwood-Smith, and the influence shows. Iit wouldn't be out of place on Brandy's 'Full Moon' album. But I'm at odds about this one - it's a good song, but maybe not suited to Kelly's voice. She doesn't have the 'don't mess me around' attitude associated with artists such as Brandy. She's too much of the girl-next-door!
Among the other songs, '(Love Lives In) Strange Places' is the best. A rather nice, breezy ballad, this is actually quite cheesy, and would be nauseating if sung by someone with a lesser voice perhaps. It's a song designed for Kelly. 'Obsession' is the other stand-out track. A bit of an off-beat song, it's an r'n'n airy ballad type-thing. You can't really describe it!
None of the other songs on the album are particularly amazing. But the girl's done good, and she's obviously put her all into the album. It's a very credible debut, and deserves to go platinum. What's that CD Player, you want me to play Past 12? Well, OK, just one more time...
