One Night Alone - Pure Genius - The best live album...ever!
Prince is back. This 3CD box set is what fans have been waiting nearly 2 decades to hear. This is the first ever official live recording from one of the worlds true living musical legends.
Based upon his recent world tour which recieved sensational reviews whereever the tour went - this proves the man we are now allowed to call Prince again is back - not that he ever really went away.
Much of this beautifully packaged box set - features music from his recent album, The Rainbow Children - which was initially avaialble only to subscribers of his NPG Music Club web site. That album was his jazziest albums ever and live - well - they truly are a return to form.
CD1 - is literally the entire Rainbow Children album performed live together with his band which featured legends in their own rights - Maceo Parker and Candy Dulfer.
CD2 - features many of his better knows hits including Rasberry Beret, Nothing Compares 2 U and How Comes You Don't Call Me Anymore.
If you're expecting an album full of his greatest hits - you may be initally disapointed. In the words of Prince himself during this performance' If You've Come To Get Your Purple Rain tonight - you've come to the wrong Place'. Purple Rain, Little Red Corvette et all are not missed - because what is included is almost to good for words.
The highlight of the whole box set is CD3 - It Ain't Over. Prince is known to play tiny small clubs after his main gigs where he's got more freedom to experiment and let rip muscially. This album is without a doubt one of the greatest live performances ever put to CD and worth the money alone.
A good point about this album is that although it is Live - they've kept the crowd noise to a minimum - a quality that ruins many live albums.
Don't even think of hesitating to buy this album - it is an essential purchase for any true music lover. If you've ever seen Prince live - this is an essential sounvenir. If you haven't - this really is the next best thing.
Well worth the wait.
One Night That U'll Never Forget!!
Prince's first official live release EVER!
Fortunately this set is not about putting together a live hits collection for the masses to feed on. That's what he's been doing for the last several years and thankfully he did not chose to release those tired retread "hit" shows as his first live album, even though from a purely commercial standpoint it would've made much more sense.
Overall this 3-disc set is a fantastic document of Prince's live performance skills, not a sterile live compilation showcasing every great song he's ever written (an impossibility anyway with only 3 discs). And I think that's the point.
You get jazz, R&B, rock, soul, funk, an acoustic section filled with falsetto balladry, after show adventuring, challenging reworking of songs both new and old, rare extended examples of Prince's tremendous skills on both guitar and piano, and rarefied musicianship all but a few of the world's elite could ever hope to match.
Several thousand serious music lovers will find their way to this box set just as they found their way to "The Rainbow Children".
Leave your preconceptions at the door and experience one of the world's greatest ever musicians turn in a performance that will have you screaming for more!
Respect has a way of travelling underground ... ...
IT AIN'T OVER!!!!!!
Amazing!! Five stars!!
After over 20 years in the music business, Prince has finally released a live album! During his career Prince has rightful gained a reputation for being a master live musician/performer and this box set makes for a very convincing case for anyone who thinks otherwise. It comprises of a colour booklet (for which the artwork could have been better, unfortunately the word 'Photoshop' comes to mind) and 3cds; the double cd entitled 'One Nite Alone... Live!' and a single cd called 'It Ain't Over'.
'One Nite Alone... Live!' consists of songs taken from various shows during Prince's recent American tour of the same name. The discs are edited so that it is not (too) obvious that you are not listening to a single complete show. There is a good mix of new material drawn from his recent studio albums (The Rainbow Children and One Nite Alone) with classics like 'Adore', 'Take Me With You', etcetera. So it would be a worthwhile treat for any causal fans who may have been wondering what Prince has been up to since he left the large record companies behind, started his online music club and hence dropped off the mass media radar. A mention also has to be given to the latest incarnation of The NPG (Prince's band), argued by some to be his best to date. Whether they are or not is another debate entirely but calling them 'adequate' would be an understatement of the highest order.
The third disc; 'It Ain't Over' is the highlight of this set. Prince's after shows are legendary (just mention 'Small Club' to any Prince fan and watch them salivate), and if you haven't heard or been lucky enough to have seen one, this disc shows you why. During the opener, 'Joy In Repetition', Prince shows off his guitar skills (which curiously he has never really done in his studio material) and this sets the tone for the rest of the cd. Prince himself sums it up best when he shouts out 'I wanna sing but it's too funky!' during '2 Nigs United for West Compton'. My only complaint would be that this disc is too short coming in at just under 56 minutes. There were plenty of after show gems played during the tour that could have been added to this disc.
'Purists', i.e. rabid bootleg collectors on Usenet ;-) will pick this set apart; argue/debate/flame each other about minute aspects regarding sound quality, editing, audience noise and whatnot. But most fans (well this one anyway) can and will say 'One Nite Alone...Live!'(Note the exclamation mark) has been worth the wait.
