Editorial Reviews
CD Description
Originally a three-LP set, this live document of the band at their largest (an octet if you count non-performing lyricist/official member Robert Hunter) is a well-recorded portrait of one of the Dead's finest eras. The Chick Corea-channeled-through-Floyd Cramer piano of Keith Godchaux had already begun to take the Dead to new improvisational heights, but diehard bluesman Pigpen was still representing the group's roots with his harmonica and gritty vocals.
If you favour the jamming side of the Dead, EUROPE '72 offers a wealth of riches. "Morning Dew", "Truckin'" and other classics are presented in epic versions, spotlighting the musicians in all their free-form glory. But those who admire the band's excellent songcraft won't be disappointed either, as songs like "Jack Straw" and "Tennesee Jed" exemplify the Dead's gift for matching lyric with melody. Though the Dead had their moments in the studio, this extended set captures the band as they were truly meant to be experienced: live and uncut.
Customer Reviews
Worth owning ( ! )
First of all I would like to introduce myself to the English reading audience . I m a customer who lives in Chile (not the UK ) , but pùrchase much merchandise from the UK amazon .
I lived in the US for 16 years . So i know the country's idiosincrcy very well . I also own around 1000 hrs of the Dead's material as an enthusiast on audio format . I also had the luck of seeing the GD 6 times in the 90 s . And as many who are reading or who know the group know they were a splendidly good sounding group live , and usually on record also .
This cd is a reissue of the 1972 album Europe 72 . The gd embarked on a 22 date tour that spring ( April - May ) playing the best halls in Denmark , Holland , Germany England & france . The end product is one of the best periods of this band registered . Songs that now 35 years later sound as current and as fresh , thanks to the great quality of these California musicians
The reissue from now has bonus tracks that are just crackling with energy ( The stranger - two souls in communion ) , and a 5 song marathon from the Tivoli theatre / Amsterdam / that includes one of the best Good Lovins the band ever released . Comparing gd records from another is difficult . Most are very good , and represent the moods of the time . And this one gives us the combination of new - then - keyboard player Keith Godcheaux and & Ron Mackernan ' pigpen ' sharing the keyboard duties , creating timeless and unique contributions to the dead s performances of the period . Pigpen passed away from liver cirrosis a year later so , against doctor s recomendation he went on tour that spring in 1972 . Im glad he did as much good material he was part of was made . And we have to value & listen to . Thanks

Apparently, that was the first title for this album, now available with added wonders for the CD release. It works really well, having space for the country-influenced("Cumberland Blues","He's Gone")rockers("Tennesee Jed",the late lamented Pigpen("Mr.Charlie"),long improvs("Truckin'"),just about all aspects of the Dead c.1972.
My favourites are "China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider",and "Sugar Magnolia",with a wonderful"Sunshine Daydram" accapella finale.Buy!!
