Customer Reviews
Welcome to the Butthole Surfers!
First off, it’s good to see that the Butthole Surfers’ debut has finally made it on to CD after all these years. Their truly greatest albums were ahead of them [the next three – ‘Psychic, Powerless, Another Man’s Sac’, ‘Locust Abortion Technician’ and ‘Hairway To Steven’] but this is still a fantastic starter.
As can be expected with most of The Butthole Surfers’ early material the mood here is a comical and very chaotic one. Some of their most riotous songs reside on this album – you can gather that they are not exactly fans of The King on stuff like ‘The Shah Sleeps In Lee Harvey’s Grave’ and ‘The Revenge Of Anus Presley’ which are two of the more manic tracks and there is also punkier stuff with ‘Wichita Cathedral’ and the brilliant ‘Suicide’. The track 'Something' was given a makeover in 1991 on the 'Pioughd' album and was great, but this is still the better version.
Overall, a top notch offering from one of the very best bands to come out of the USA in many a year and I would recommend this album without hesitation, but if you’re just starting out in the world of Butthole Surfers then I would probably go for the three aforementioned albums first and then get this.
Sorry, but I can’t comment on the live stuff as I haven’t heard any of it!!
