Customer Reviews

an ever open door5
anyone needing a new path away from the tried and tested commercial motown sound need to look no further than this collection of gems.searling has put together a very entertaining and original bunch of absolute quality tunes.bring on volume 3.

Motown grooves4
This 21-track collection of Motown floor-fillers is conceived and compiled by Richard Searling, presenter of Soul Sauce on Jazz FM, who explains in the extensive sleeve notes that it is intended 'to pay tribute to the true "underground" heritage of arguably the most important American soul label ever', and to this aim he has gathered up many rare and previously unreleased gems as well as some more well known pieces such as as Martha and the Vandellas' You've Been In Love Too Long and Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's California Soul (actually Valerie Simpson depping for Tammi). From this collection it would seem that he favours the Northern Soul end of the Motown oeuvre.

As always one is amazed that so many top quality recordings have languished in a vault for so many decades and glad of the privilege to hear them now. There are some discrepancies between Richard Searling's annotations and the factual information listed beneath, which one can put down to his enthusiasm, though in the case of the Temptation's I Got Heaven Right Here On Earth, he seems to be correct as the listing that follows describes a completely different song (You Make Your Own Heaven And Hell Right Here On Earth).

Stand out artists here include the Four Tops, the Velvelettes and the inimitable Brenda Holloway

Better than the first4
Compiled by Richard Searling and as he says in the intro notes better than the first in the series, and I have to agree this is a better compilation of records hence a rating of 4.5
The CD comes with good liner notes, which makes a lot of difference and shows that some homework has been done on the assembled artists. This should serve as an example to all compilers, that a few extra lines of information can make a whole lot of difference.
On to the music, there's a good mix of previously unreleased material and B-sides etc.. The set kicks off with Marvin Gaye in fine form, then the previously unreleased song "What you gonna do with me baby" which totally blows out the water the theory that all unreleased material was unreleased because it was rubbish, obviously some of it was but not this track. In fact all the unreleased tracks on this CD are good.
There's some Northern Soul stompers with Martha Reeves-You've been in love too long and The Velvellettes- let love live. Only one suspect track and that's the last one, otherwise every track is good.
This should please anyone who likes Soul music and is highly recommended, well done Mr Searling and looking forward to the next one.
