ToeJam and Earl III: Mission to Earth delivers a comic adventure of cosmic proportions, blending phat beats, risqué humour and truckloads of attitude into one seriously funkified quest to save the universe. The game also features special downloadable characters and additional levels via Xbox Live.
The 12 Sacred Albums of Funk have been stolen and it's up to gamers playing as ToeJam, Big Earl and their new gal-pal Latisha, to journey to Earth and return the vanished vinyls to Lamont the Funkopotamous, source of all Funk in the known universe. Scattered throughout more than 30 massive, randomly generated levels, the 12 Sacred Albums of Funk will ultimately give players the power to square off against the dreaded Anti-Funk and save the universe.
Xbox Live subscribers will be able to access both the Hades maze and Funkadelic levels, which offer the most lethal enemies and valuable prizes combined with colourful, mind bending scenery. With Live, players can romp on these and other levels with three new characters. The robot Suteki will act much like the game's starlet Latisha, only with enhanced speed and jumping distance, as well as better luck when opening potentially dangerous gifts. A second robot, Earl Bot, has enhanced speed as well as the ability to inflict double damage. Finally, ToeJam's cousin Nerdy ToeJam will be selectable and will run slower but jump higher and further than his funkadelic relative.
As gamers explore Earth they will battle hordes of decidedly un-funky Earthlings--from insane drill-wielding dentists and perky cheerleaders to medusa babies in walkers. Players must master the ways of Funk-Fu and make use of scores of gift-wrapped power-ups, ranging from Icarus Wings to the Funkmobile, to convert the clueless Earthlings to the ways of Funk.

Funkalicious!
Months before this game was even rumoured about in computer magazines and so on - I thought to myself how fantastic the original Toejam and Earl 1 was on the Sega Megadrive - and then realising that, I kept bugging my friends telling them every little fantastic detail about that game, how fun it was, and how much a new toejam and earl game should be made for a new console!
And then my prayers were answered! I was so excited, hoping that Sega would throw away the idea's they had from Toejam and Earl 2 (which was a big platform scrolling disapointment) - and recreate the original game in lush 3D! Well they did just that! And what better console to do it on than the good ol' Xbox!
This new installment of the TJ&E series asks you to help those funky aliens by going around vast worlds looking for the 12 sacred albums of funk that have been scattered around on earth! crazy eh?! well it's a similiar concept to the first game - where they had crash landed on earth and had to find all of their ship parts scattered around the different levels. This is an ace concept! The levels are randomly generated (as like TJ&E1) so if you play the game again, the levels won't exactly be the same - which means increased longetivity of the game. There are plenty of different earthlings to funkify and some earthlings aren't as easy to convert as others are which can make the game quite hectic and challenging! And the good old presents are still there - plenty of different special ups and surprises that add different twists and more fun to the game.
After having a good play on it I decided that the graphics were absolutely superb - not that i'd expect anything less: textures are detailed, gameplay is smooth (no frame rate strain), and physics are very impressive (trees sway with wind and when your character is walking up a slope (for example) then he'll slow down slightly) - just the little things like that!
The gameplay isn't too challenging - it's an ideal game if you don't want to have to think but you don't want to be bored out of your head (and you want a bit of a laugh at the same time)
The little thing that did disapoint me was the speech in the game: now i suppose being on a more powerful console it is inevitable that the characters will have to talk - but they really shouldn't! Perhaps for a few words and so on - but Sega have tried to make it 'cool' making Toejam, Earl and Latisha and certain other characters do raps and songs and such but they just don't work at all! But on the up side, you've really got to laugh at them - it all adds to the fun element of the game because these aliens just act like some white-boys/girls-trying-to-act-black!
XBOX LIVE content should hopefully be another factor to add longetivity to the game! Although I haven't seen any levels or characters to download yet, they should most definatly come to europe as they are available in the US.
As I say - this is a very fun game. If you loved the first one or even the last one then this you'll no doubt find this great! However, don't go buying it if you're expecting some deep strategic gameplay and a deep plot! Very funky indeed!
Platform playing at it's good old fashioned best
Toe Jam & Earl III is an excellent platform game. The graphics are fantastic and the game play exicting. The objective of the game is to find the funk records spread throughout the world with many additonal tasks to perform in the meantime.
Anyone who remembers the old TJ&E will love this. The trill of opening presents and finding that you have rocket skates on your feet, the horrible dentist with his poisonous novocaine.
The enemies are varied with their own particular skill set. Moles that steal your presents and my particular favourite the cowboys that try to turn you 'a little bit country' and steal your funk.
You can play as Toe jam, Earl or Latisha again with their own skill set. As you go through the game you gain 'promotion' and the relief at not being a dufus is matched by enhanced skills to get you through the harder levels.
Well worth a purchase - enjoy!
fun, remember fun?
I remember fun...putting a game in the slot of a master system and just enjoying the gameplay...well here it all is in the next millenium package. Funkified tunes, humour a plenty. I laughed out loud and had to call the missus in to hear some of it..thats true ya know! Involving characters and downloadables (slightly uninspiring additions but still additions nonetheless)A well balanced learning curve makes this accessable for all ages and the optional language censor makes it even more family friendly. My 6 year old has had bags of fun and me, well I was funkified five minutes in. ENJOY this game, its well worth the money.
