BEWARE!!!
Contra was an excellent game back on the SNES, and its amazing they can now fit it on a handheld, with all its fancy graphic effects, but i warn you - Its INSANELY difficult!! Only one weapon can be carried, smart bombs are none existent, and setting the difficulty to easy makes it more fun to play, but gives you only half the levels than the normal game! No mode 7 sub-levels either! I Have the American version, but i assume the UK one has the same problems.
The game is great to play and has superb visuals, but it's severely marred by the teeth grindingly frustrating difficulty level! Not for beginners! Or most people! Just hardcore contra fans!!
A classic
The first thing you need to know is that this is an impressive conversion, all the levels that have been coverted from the snes version are identical. I was initially disappointed that the top down mode 7 levels from the original had not made it(i've got F zero they could have been fitted in on a bigger cart) but the chance to play two completely new Contra levels, more than makes up for this omission. So what are these levels like? They are really rather good and don't look out of place in the game. One is set on a speeding train that gets attacked by a robot and the other is set in a laboratory with face hugger like creatures attacking you. For the first time player this game would seem monsterously hard but I had this game first time round so I know most of the enemies attack patterns and thoroughly enjoyed playing this classic again. Great graphics, sound, and controls. It seems to be more difficult to play on a regular GBA because of it's darkness, but a fantastic peice of gaming history.
